DOTY SEVENTH IN THREE-POINT SHOOTOUT; WINS AT&T LONG DISTANCE CHAMPIONSHIP
UB senior Brenna Doty finished seventh of eight competitors in the 1997 NCAA Three-Point Shootout on March 27 at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. She scored 10 points out of a possible 30 and was eliminated following the first round of the shootout. Ohio State senior Marcie Alberts won the women's shootout and then went on to defeat the men's champion Nate Erdmann of Oklahoma for the overall title.

Doty's 3.5 three-point field goals per game for the season has earned her the AT&T Long Distance Championship. The award is given each year to the individual who finishes with the best per game average. A press conference will be held April 8 at 4 p.m. in The Bullpen in Alumni Arena for the award presentation to Doty.



RACKSTERS FINISH SECOND AT ROCHESTER INVITATIONAL
The Bulls and Royals both finished second at last weekend's University of Rochester Invitational Track and Field meet. The Bulls scored 76 1/2 points finishing behind Alfred's 82 1/2. Rochester (64 1/2), Brockport (37 1/2) and Fredonia (17) followed. The Royals tallied 36 points to finish behind host Rochester's 52.

The Bulls took two individual events and a pair of relays. Lee Nanton took the 110 hurdles in 15.84 while Mike Quagliata won the 100 meters in 11.32. The 4 x 100 relay team of Omar Doyley, Spencer Bell, David Hinson and Quagliata placed first in 43.90 while the 4 x 400 team of Doyley, Bell, Hinson and Kweli Musa were victorious in 3:27.38.

Double winners for The Royals were Jennifer Kilborn, who won the 100 hurdles in 16.60 and the triple jump with a distance of 10.51 meters and Rachel Refermat, who took the shot put (11.29 meters) and hammer (34.84 meters).

Other winners for the Royals included Kerri Shpur in the 1500 (5:11.24), Gretchen Welch in the 5000 (18:27.95), Amanda Knataitis in the high jump (1.55 meters).

A pair of Royals had strong performances at the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State. Sophomore Ruth Conlon topped her own school mark in the hammer throw with a distance of 159-10 to win the event. Sophomore Shelly Hamilton finished third in the high jump at 5-7. Up next ­ the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va. this weekend.



WOMEN'S TENNIS COMPLETES SPRING BREAK MATCHES
Coach Kathy Twist's women's tennis team traveled to Hilton Head Island, S.C. for their annual spring break matches. The Royals dropped all six of their dual matches for a 5-9 record but did have strong individual performances.

The Royals were led by Danielle Rakowsky at No. five singles with a pair of victories. Rakowsky downed Amy Haybaker of Morehead State 7-6, 6-3 and defeated Bradley's Zita Holeczy 6-1, 7-6. Rakowsky is 10-6 overall this season and 7-4 in dual matches. Rakowsky was named the Mid-Con Conference's Female Athlete of the Week. Wemillie Arellano, playing at No. three, picked up a win for the Royals

in the Western Carolina meeting, defeating Terry Jean Youtz 6-3, 6-4. Arellano also combined with Amy Snyder to defeat Morehead State's Haybaker and Karen Von Deenen 9-7 in the No. one doubles match.

The Royals' 5-9 overall mark, which includes their fall season, puts the team in fourth place in the Mid-Con's standings. Central Connecticut at 13-1 leads with Western Illinois (8-3) and Valparaiso (5-7) following.

UB is off until April 12 where they will face Robert Morris and Mid-Con foe Youngstown State on the road. The Mid-Con Tournament is scheduled for April 23-28 in Kansas City.
