BULLS RUN WIN STREAK TO FIVE
The Bulls continued their impressive play of late with a 95-80 win at Chicago State on Saturday. UB has taken five straight and seven of the last eight to improve to 6-1 in the Mid-Continent Conference and 11-6 overall. The win also moved the Bulls within a half game of first-place Valparaiso.

Mike Martinho led the Bulls with 26 points on 7-of-10 shooting including 6-of-9 from three-point range. Rasaun Young added 13 and Matt Clemens 10.

The Bulls got strong bench production from Scott McMillin with nine points and six rebounds in 15 minutes. Bernard Wheeler's nine and Chandon Jones' career-high eight points also keyed the Bulls' bench attack.

"We tried to use our bench, not only to give our starters a break, but to get experience (for the reserves) and keep them sharp," commented head coach Tim Cohane.

Earlier in the week, Young scored 22 points and freshman forward Zaid Alkhas came off the bench to net 13 points as the Bulls downed Youngstown State, 70-48, in a Mid-Continent Conference battle at Alumni Arena.

Young hit 10-of-16 shots from the field, while Clemens added 14 points, five assists and a career-high nine rebounds for UB. The Bulls, who shot 48.1 percent for the game, also held a 42-29 advantage off the backboards.

The Penguins connected on just 30.6 percent of their shots and committed 19 turnovers in the game. Leonard Tangishaka, who had five blocks for the Bulls, led UB on a 13-2 run with a pair of blocked shots midway through the second half, as UB extended a 30-27 lead to 43-29 with 10:22 left in the game. Youngstown State never got the lead in single digits for the rest of the game.

Following a Jan. 27 meeting with Northeastern Illinois, the Bulls return home for an important conference tilt against Valparaiso that should determine the league leader heading into the final month of the regular season. UB then faces Western Illinois on Monday beginning at 6 p.m. and broadcast live on the Empire Sports Network.

ROYALS ROLL PAST CHICAGO STATE
Brenna Doty set a school record for three-pointers in a game with nine as the Royals rolled to an 86-66 victory at Chicago State on Saturday. With the win, the Royals improved to 14-2 overall and 6-1 in the Mid-Continent Conference.

Doty scored 30 points in the game, the most all season by a Royal and most by Doty since 23 in the season opener against Cornell. The Rexford, N.Y., senior bettered her previous record of seven treys in a game, set last year at Hawaii, and also dished out a season-best eight assists, one shy of her career-high.

The Royals also placed three others in double figures, led by Charissa Garder with 16, while Kim Coon and Catherine Jacob added 11 apiece. Jacob also tallied five assists, while Lisette Prinzing and Nicole Blakeslee tied for high rebounding honors with five each.

UB shot 52.5 percent from the field, nailing 32 of their 61 attempts including 13-of-26 from behind the three-point arc.

Following a showdown on Jan. 27 at Northeastern Illinois, the Royals are back home at Alumni Arena to host Valparaiso Saturday and Western Illinois on Monday. The Monday game with the Westerwinds is scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. and will be televised live on the Empire Sports Network.

BULLS WRESTLING SPLIT HOME DUALS
The University at Buffalo wrestling team earned a split in two dual meets at Alumni Arena on Saturday, defeating Wagner 50-0 before losing a close 18-12 decision to Mid-American Conference member Kent State.

In the match against Wagner, the Seahawks forfeited five of the 10 weight classes and senior 126-pounder Jason Wartinger pinned his opponent at 1:30 of the bout, as the Bulls cruised to the win.

The second match against Kent State was much closer, with three lead changes during the meet. Wartinger was again victorious at 126 pounds, as were senior 134-pounder Jeromy McVige and senior 150-pounder John Stutzman, who extended his winning streak to 24 straight bouts. Senior 177-pounder Eric Gross was a winner at his weight class as well.

Down 15-12 entering the heavyweight bout, the Bulls needed a win by freshman Mike Garofalo to tie the match. Despite a strong effort by Garofalo, Kent's 1996 NCAA Division I national qualifier Stephan Terebieniec scored a takedown in overtime to give the Golden Flash the 18-12 win.

The Bulls are in action this weekend, meeting Wilkes University and Seton Hall on the road before returning to Alumni Arena on Feb. 4 to host Slippery Rock at 7:30 p.m.

MEN'S SWIMMING
The Bulls were off this week, preparing for Friday night's important test against Notre Dame. Action begins at 6 p.m. The Bulls and Fighting Irish are familiar with each other this season as UB traveled in December for the Notre Dame Invitational, where UB finished third and Notre Dame second.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING
The Royals dropped a pair of dual meets Saturday at Cornell. UB lost to the host Big Red 167-121 and to Dartmouth 174-123. The Royals are now 2-3 in dual meet competition.

Following the makeup of the Royals meet against Canisius on Jan. 29, UB will travel to Cleveland State for a dual meet on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

The Bulls downed the Golden Griffins 80-59 while the Royals took an 88-34 win. Teams from Buffalo State, Erie Community College and Roberts Wesleyan also participated but were not included in the scoring.
