Electronic Highways: P_Z_LE S_LVE_

Now that classes are almost over and you have some time to relax over the long intersession, here's a site that word-puzzle lovers should enjoy. Bryn Owen's Games Page at (http://www.eecg.toronto.edu/~bryn/HTML/Games.html) is an interesting collection of word-game makers and solvers.

If you like jumbles (words with mixed up letters) you'll love the Jumble Maker. It generates five- and six-letter words randomly chosen from the dictionary and scrambles them. All you need to do is select the number of jumbles you would like. If you get stuck, this site also has a Jumble Solver which un-jumbles your jumbles!

You can solve all types of word puzzles in the Crossword and Word-Game Solver section. With the crossword solver, simply fill in as many known letters in the word using periods wherever a letter is not known, like this: "s..d", choose your dictionary (English abridged or unabridged) and retrieve a list of four-letter words that begin with "s" and end in "d". You can even click on a word in the list to get the definition.

The Scrabble Helper page has two useful purposes for players. It checks whether a word is valid and it returns all words that can be made from the given letters. The Dictionary Lookup lets you type in a word and it gives the definition (or word synonym if you use the Thesaurus Lookup) from Webster's dictionary.

This Game Page site even gives the amount of time it will take your search to run, such as: "be patient" for seven letters in Scrabble or "six seconds" for a four-letter "un-jumbulation."

There is a wide variety of word, number and story games to help keep your mind active. Links to "Yahoo's Puzzle Section," "Spider's Fun & Games Picks" and other Web game sites are also found here. Have fun!
