FOOTBALL
The Bulls fell to 5-3 Saturday afternoon with their 41-20 loss at Massachusetts before 8,819 fans at Warren P. McGuirk Stadium.

Tailback Anthony Swan and fullback Todd Pace each rushed for over 100 yards for the third time this season. Swan rushed for 111 yards on 26 carries and one touchdown. He is now just 108 yards shy of 1,000 yards for the season. Pace picked up 102 yards on 20 carries.

UB cut the gap to 14-7 at the half as quarterback Erik Rusin hit Drew Haddad with a 21-yard TD pass. However, the Minutemen scored two third-quarter touchdowns to put the game away.

Rusin passed for a career-best 195 yards, completing 15 of his 29 attempts with a pair of TDs. Haddad was Rusin's favorite target, hauling in six receptions for 111 yards.

Defensively, the Bulls were led by Eric Lee with 10 tackles. Craig Guest added eight stops while Anthony Scott had seven tackles along with a sack, a forced fumble and a pass breakup.

The Bulls have the week off before tangling with Hofstra on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Hempstead.



VOLLEYBALL
The Royals played three matches over the weekend winning a pair of local rivals Niagara and Canisius but falling to Pittsburgh to snap a five-match winning streak.

UB needed just three games to defeat Niagara 15-6, 15-7, 15-8, evening their record at 12-12 Friday night at Alumni Arena. The Royals got solid play from Candi Sims and Kathy Brinkworth who each tallied eight kills. Brinkworth became the first player in UB history to record 500 kills and 500 blocks in a career. She reached the kill plateau in the first game of the match after having achieved the blocks milestone the previous weekend at the Mid-Continent Conference's East Division cluster matches in Troy, Alabama. Christina Gianino led the Royals with 20 assists and added seven digs.

UB continued their winning streak with a four-game victory over Canisius at the Koessler Center 14-16, 16-14, 16-14, 15-8. Sims and Amy Burda registered 12 kills each while Burda led the defense with 17 digs and six blocks, including four solo. Sims and Aprille Sweeting also added six blocks apiece. Somer Deschambault chipped in with 36 assists and 13 digs.

The winning streak came to an end Sunday afternoon with a 15-10, 15-13, 15-8 loss to Pittsburgh at Alumni Arena to even the Royals record at 13-13.

Sims and Corrin Hirst led the way with nine kills each. Deschambault added 17 digs and 23 assists while Sims and Sweeting each had four blocks.

The Royals are back in action this weekend for a pair of matches. On Friday night they host Robert Morris at Alumni Arena at 7 p.m. while on Saturday, Siena comes to town to face the Royals at 7 p.m.



WOMEN'S SOCCER
Kelly Starchok's goal with 10 seconds remaining in regulation proved to be the game-winner as the Royals downed Canisius 1-0 last Wednesday.

Starchok, one of the first Royals off the bench, re-entered the contest with 1:45 to go in the scoreless contest to get a shot on net before the end of the match. Starchok took a pass from Tracey Britton and sent the ball trickling into the net past Canisius goalkeeper Jennifer Silata.

The goal avoided what would have been the third straight overtime contest for the Royals. UB outshot the Griffs 21-8. UB keeper Joanne Chillingsworth stopped seven shots in the shutout. UB has now shut out four opponents this season.

On Saturday the Royals scored a late second-half goal and kept the pressure on Eastern Michigan but fell short in a 2-1 loss RAC Field in a match played under terrible weather conditions.

Senior Kathleen Magner scored her fifth goal of the season at the 70:06 mark of the match off a pass from Beth Costello to close the deficit to 2-1 but that was all the scoring the Royals could muster. UB had a chance to tie the match and force overtime but was unable to convert. Chillingsworth stopped six Eastern Michigan shots.

Eastern Michigan scored a pair of first-half goals midway through the period on markers by Amy Knott and Tara Bilovus.

The Royals are now 6-5-3 as they head on the road this weekend playing at Detroit-Mercy on Friday and Toledo on Sunday.



CROSS COUNTRY
The Bulls finished third at the Albany Invitational. Chris Keenan led the Bulls, finishing the 8K course in eighth place in 25:59.49. Pat Nolan finished 11th in 26:09.41.

The Royals traveled to the prestigious Penn State Invitational, racing against some of the country's best women's squads. The Royals finished eighth with 190 points, behind first-place Missouri (46) and second-place Penn State (48).

Gretchen Welch was the Royals' top finisher completing the 5K course in 19:23 for 37th place. Jennifer Folckemer finished 40th in 19:26.

Next up for both squads is most important meet of the season-the Mid-Continent Conference Championships. The meet is set for Nov. 2 at Valparaiso, Ind.
