"MIDNIGHT MADNESS" HITS BUFFALO AS BASKETBALL PRACTICE OPENS
The UB men's and women's basketball teams kick off their seasons Oct. 18 with the annual "Midnight Madness" celebration at Alumni Arena. Admission is free. The evening begins with a women's volleyball match at 7 p.m. with the Royals facing Niagara, followed at 9 p.m. by the band "God's Children."

Coach Sal Buscaglia's women's basketball team, last season's Mid-Continent Conference runners-up, take the court at 10:45 p.m. The Royals will warm up and scrimmage for one hour. Promotions and music will count down the final 15 minutes to midnight. At midnight, coach Tim Cohane's Bulls hit the floor for the first time in 1996. The team also will warm up and scrimmage for the fans. A three-point shooting contest and a slam dunk competition will conclude the exhibition.

REVERSAL OF FORTUNE FOR BULLS IN LOSS
For the second time this season the Bulls came up on the short end of the takeaway battle, dropping a tough 17-6 decision to Youngstown State last Saturday at UB Stadium.

The Bulls, who were No. 1 in the country in takeaways, had five giveaways and never got their offense on track. The Bulls saw a mishandled snap on a field goal and a fumble inside the YSU 25 end first-half scoring opportunities and a fumbled kickoff return led to another Penguin score.

The Bulls trailed 17-0 in the third quarter before they went 80 yards on 10 plays and Anthony Swan burst in from the one. Swan finished with 119 yards on 27 carries and went over the 2,000-yard career mark. Todd Pace added 86 yards on 19 carries. UB quarterback Erik Rusin, starting his first game, completed 3-of-15 passes for 28 yards and was intercepted twice.

Defensively, the Bulls got big games from linebacker Craig Guest and noseguard Keith Hansen. Guest had 16 tackles to go over 400 in his career; Hansen had 7 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Defensive end Hardy Mitchell added 1.5 sacks for the Bulls. The Bulls, now 5-2, hit the road for a contest Saturday at Massachusetts.

ROYALS VOLLEYBALL ROLLS THRU ALABAMA
The Royals left Alabama Sunday as leaders of the Mid-Continent Conference's East Division following their sweep at Troy State. Coach Bob Maxwell's squad is now 11-12 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league play. UB opened the weekend with a five-game win over Youngstown State. Kathy Brinkworth led the team on both sides of the net scoring 17 kills and a .593 hitting percentage while adding six blocks. Corrin Hirst, Aprille Sweeting and Candi Sims also added double-figure kill totals.

Saturday, the Royals took four games to down the host Trojans, 15-6, 15-11, 9-15, 16-14. UB registered 55 digs and 15 team blocks. Amy Burda tallied 14 digs; Brinkworth had 10 blocks and Sims added eight. Brinkworth also led the Royals with nine kills.

Sunday, the Royals rolled over Central Connecticut State 15-7, 15-13, 15-7. Hirst had 10 kills; Burda and Somer Deschambault picked up three service aces and nine digs apiece. The Royals host Niagara Friday night and Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon. Saturday, the Royals travel to Canisius.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Royals played to a pair of deadlocks at RAC Field over the weekend. Friday, UB and Duquesne played 120 minutes of scoreless soccer; Sunday, the Royals tied Radford 1-1. Coach Jean-A. Tassy's booters are now 5-4-3. In Sunday's match against the Highlanders, UB got on the scoreboard early in the first half as Kathleen Magner hit the net with her fourth goal of the season on an assist from Tracey Britton. Radford tied the score as Jill McFarlane's shot got past UB goalkeeper Joanne Chillingsworth. In the second half, Mary Morgan came on to play what would become 75 minutes of scoreless action. The Royals host Eastern Michigan Saturday at RAC Field at 11 a.m.

MEN'S SOCCER
Coach John Astudillo's Bulls picked up their first win of the season with a 4-2 Mid-Continent East Division victory over Oneonta State. The win raised the Bulls' record to 1-11-1 overall and 1-2 in league play. Liam McHugh scored the game-winner late in the first half as the Bulls scored four straight goals on the Red Dragons after spotting their guests a 1-0 advantage.

Ediru Okpewho knotted the score at 1-1 at the 31-minute mark. Four minutes later, McHugh scored on Brian Cruickshank's free kick to give the Bulls the lead. In the second half, the Bulls picked up goals from Tim Merrick and Chris Klink. Buffalo goalkeeper Jim Schoenberg stopped 11 Oneonta shots. The Bulls take the week off before a road trip to Howard (Oct. 25) and Central Connecticut State (Oct. 27).

MEN'S & WOMEN'S TENNIS
On Oct. 8 the Bulls and Royals tennis teams rolled past Canisius. Coach Russ Crispell's club defeated the Griffs by a 6-1 margin; Kathy Twist's Royals were victorious by a 5-2 count. Danielle Rakowsky led the Royals past Canisius "double-bageling" Anna Khailtov 6-0, 6-0 at number six singles and teaming with Annulett Dillon to defeat Khailtov and Meg Heighberger 8-6 in the number three doubles match. Dillon downed Hilary Nichols 6-3, 6-3 to take the fourth singles match.

For the men, Wibisono Murdono and Andrew Garber were double winners. In singles play, Murdono defeated Ryan Thayer 6-2, 6-3 at number three while Garber defeated Jay Palmer 6-1, 6-0 at number four. The duo combined at number two doubles to defeat Victor Vanov and Ed Bauman 8-1.

Saturday, the Bulls fell to Eastern Michigan's Eagles 6-1 at University Tennis Center. Mike Minter was the Bulls' lone winner. The Bulls are now 4-3 in dual matches this season; the Royals are 3-2.
