UB Wings: A New Look

Those returning to campus will see that the university's electronic information service known as UB Wings has a new look-bright, airy and beautiful. It beckons students, faculty and staff to search its computerized links to university information and to use it as a starting point for surfing the World-Wide Web (the Internet at its hypertextual best.) The UB Wings home page offers the following menu: Happenings, Directories, Students, Faculty & Staff, Libraries, Computing, Departments, Services, and of course, the Internet.

Select any option and you will be catapulted into an array of resources. For example, upon choosing "Services" you next decide between linking to "Campus," "Alumni" or "Community" services. Pick "Campus" and you have the option of selecting "Public Safety." From "Public Safety" you find, for example: "Articles About Public Safety," "Computer Crime," "Lost and Found," "Safety Information," "Send Mail to the Department," "Sexual Assault Information," and "Unsolved Homicide." Choose "Safety Information" and you find such items as "Alcohol Policy," "Important Numbers," "Operation ID," "UB Crime Statistics" and "Vehicle & Bicycle Safety."

While the welcome banner proclaims that within the "pages" of UB Wings you will find "almost anything you need to know about the university," in fact this campus resource is "a work in progress." The Wings staff is eager to recruit new UB "information providers" who have non-commercial material of interest to the university community.

To search UB Wings via your campus E-mail account in its text only version type wings at your system prompt. Those using a graphical www browser such as Netscape (the only way to experience the "new look") enter the following URL: . For assistance in connecting to UB Wings, contact the Computing Center's Help Desk at 645-3542. To volunteer to become an information provider contact or call Jim Gerland at 645-3557.
