Reporter Volume 26, No.9 November 3, 1994 CHEMISTRY NAMED FELLOW: Paras N. Prasad, Photonics Science Professor of Chemistry at UB, has been named a fellow in the Optical Society of America. He was honored in October at the society's annual meeting in Dallas for his outstanding contributions to the development of organic materials for nonlinear optics. An internationally recognized leader in the field of optics and spectroscopy, Prasad joined the UB faculty in 1974. He serves as founder and director of the UB Photonics Research Laboratory, considered one of the most advanced and comprehensive facilities for photonics in the world. Author of more than 250 articles, he co-authored, with David J. William, "Introduction to Nonlinear Optical Effect in Organic Molecules and Polymers," only monograph-textbook in the field. CHEMICAL ENGINEERING RECEIVES ACS AWARD: Eli Ruckenstein, Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering at UB, has received the Langmuir Distinguished Lecturer Award of the Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. Ruckenstein recently received the award at the society's national meeting in Washington, D.C. In 1990 he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, the highest professional distinction an engineer can achieve in the U.S., in recognition of his outstanding achievements in surface science. A member of the UB faculty since 1973, Ruckenstein has been honored by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers with the Alpha Chi Sigma Award and the Walker Award. MICROBIOLOGY HONORED BY POLAND: Two UB faculty members, Marek B. Zaleski and Felix Milgrom, have received the Cross of Merit, one of the highest awards presented by the Republic of Poland. The presentations to Zaleski, UB professor of microbiology, and Milgrom, internationally known immunologist and Distinguished Professor of microbiology at UB, were made Oct. 20 in New York City. Both are natives of Poland. Milgrom, chair of UB's Department of Microbiology from 1967-85, is known for his work in human organ transplantation, autoimmunity, renal immunopathology and tumor immunology. Zaleski, who came to UB in 1978, co-translated writings of the Rev. Jozef Tischner into English. The book was published in 1984 as "The Spirit of Solidarity."
