November 3, 1994: Vol26n9: Training drill on South Campus The Buffalo Materials Research Center will hold a training drill at 1 p.m. today, on Coal Road, between Rotary Road and Bailey Avenue (between the Sherman parking lot and Rotary Field) on the UB South Campus. The drill aims to test the coordinated response of campus and off-site agencies to a radiological emergency. The scenario: Two trucks, one of which is carrying radioactive materials, collide. One of the vehicles catches fire, and some of the radioactive materials containers are compromised. This generates airborne radioactivity, surface contamination and high direct radiation shine. Eight people are hurt, some of whom are contaminated. The "fire" will be extinguished by the Buffalo Fire Department. Victims will be triaged on site, and then transported by ambulance to the VA Medical Center. Participants will include the Buffalo Fire and Police departments; Buffalo Emergency Services; the VA Medical Center; Buffalo Materials Research Center; UB Public Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Radiation Protection Services and University Facilities, and Erie County Emergency Services.
