November 3, 1994: Vol26n9: SPORTSVIEW This time, there was no last-second heartbreak. No breakdowns. No excuses. The University at Buffalo scored its most important victory since returning to Division I with a 24-21 win over Maine on Saturday night before 3,787 at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. It avenged a bitter 30-27 loss to the Black Bears in the inaugural game at UB Stadium last year. In that game, UB took a 27-24 lead with 54 seconds left, only to see Maine's Robert Tubbs return the ensuing kickoff 78 yards. The Black Bears scored two plays later. On Saturday, the Bulls (3-5) held the ball for the final three minutes of the game. Maurice Perry's 40-yard run with 1:30 left allowed UB to run out the clock. "This is the first time we've been able to put four good quarters together on both sides of the ball," coach Jim Ward said after his team won its third game in four starts. Defense was the key for the Bulls, especially in the second half when they held Maine to just 33 yards rushing. The Black Bears of the Yankee Conference fell to 3-6. Quarterback Cliff Scott replaced Marty Barrett (1980-83) as the most prolific passer in school history, breaking a pair of Barrett's old records. Scott hit his brother, Anthony, with an 11-yard completion in the first half to eclipse Barrett's total of 513. The senior from Grand Island now has 523 completions. Later, Scott established the mark for career yards with 7,014, besting Barrett's 6,956. Scott completed 19 of 34 for 282 yards and a pair of scores. UB hosts Youngstown State, the defending I-AA national champions, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Cross Country The Royals earned the University at Buffalo's first-ever Mid-Continent Conference crown when they took first place at Saturday's Mid-Continent Cross Country Championship meet at Crystal Lake, Illinois. UB scored 36 points to finish ahead of second place Youngstown State with 63 in the 10-team field. The Royals placed three of the top four runners on the All-Conference first-team to secure the crown. Stacey Strothmann finished second overall along the 5,000 meter course in 19:29 to lead the Royals. Judith Novak was third in 19:42 and Nilam Shukla finished fourth also with a time of 19:42. All three were rewarded with first-team All-Conference recognition. Julie Phelps crossed the finish line in 20:10 for ninth place and a second-team All-Conference showing. Gretchen Welch finished 18th in 20:42 to round out the top five for UB. Head coach Dick Barry earned Mid-Continent Conference Coach of the Year honors thanks to the Royals showing at the meet and their 10-0 dual meet mark this season. On the men's side, the Bulls finished fourth in the 10-team race with 73 points to Youngstown State's winning score of 49. Charlie Moynihan earned first-team All-Conference honors with his fifth place finish of 27:34 on the 8,000 meter course. UB's Chris Keenan was seventh in 27:41 to earn second-team honors. VOLLEYBALL UB picked up a pair of important home wins last week to improve their record to 9-16 as they return to the Mid-Continent wars with three matches at Troy State this weekend. The Royals defeated Canisius for the second time this season with their three-game victory over the Griffins 15-12, 15-5, 15-4. Candie Hirst led the Royals in the match with nine kills and nine digs while Cathy Novocilsky added eight kills and five blocks. Laurie Santelli also chipped in with seven kills and seven digs. On Sunday afternoon, after spotting the visitors the first game, UB rallied to defeat Loyola College (Md.) in four games 5-15, 15-10, 15-7, 15-13. The Royals picked up 24 kills from Hirst, a junior from Lafayette, NY. Hirst also registered a team-high eight service aces to go with 13 digs and 4 block assists. Santelli added 16 kills and 21 digs for the Royals while freshman Kathy Brinkworth had 12 digs and six block assists. WOMEN'S SOCCER The Royals finished their 1994 season fit to be tied over the weekend with two matches in Florida that went into the record books as a pair of deadlocks. Their home finale during the week also went into overtime, as the Royals played the equivalent of four matches in four days. On Wednesday, the Royals battled Canisius to overtime before falling to the Griffins 4-3. Sophomore Lori Perillo scored all three goals for the Royals including the one that forced the extra play with 18:02 left in regulation. However, Canisius' April Wisniewski scored just 2:47 into the first extra session to give the visitors a 4-3 lead. In her final game at UB's RAC Field goalkeeper Rachelle Galipeau stopped 11 Canisius shots in 120 minutes of action. The Royals then finished the season with a pair of matches in Florida. Their first stop, against Florida Atlantic of the Trans America Athletic Conference, resulted in a 0-0 deadlock after the two overtime periods. The Royals were outshot 13-8 in the match as UB's Nikki Pittaro with five saves and recorded her third shutout of the season. The following afternoon, the Royals were in DeLand to take on the Stetson Hatters, where they played to a 1-1 draw. Stetson's Melissa Engle opened the scoring 6:51 into the match with a shot from 30 yards out to give the hosts a 1-0 edge. However, Joanna Tower notched her ninth goal of the season with just 2:12 to play in the first half on a penalty kick. Neither team would record a goal in the second half or the two 15-minute overtime periods. The Royals concluded their season with a 5-9-3 overall record. Perillo and Tower led the team with 23 points each this season. Perillo's 10 goals led the team while Tower had nine goals and was tied for the team-high of five assists with Kelly Starchok. The goalkeeper tandem of Galipeau and Pittaro accounted for four shutouts as Pittaro finished the season with a 1.78 goals against average in 12 games while Galipeau had a 2.09 gaa in nine games.
