Reporter Volume 26, No.8 October 27, 1994 CHEMISTRY. HONORED BY SYMPOSIUM: Colleagues, fellow researchers and former students honored George H. Nancollas, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at UB and chair of the Department of Biomaterials, with a three-day symposium at a recent national meeting of the American Chemical Society. Organized to recognize Nancollas' many contributions to biomaterials and industrial science, the symposium brought researchers from Japan, Australia and many European countries. Nancollas' work "has been critical to understanding the mechanisms of crystal growth and inhibition," said Zahid Amjad, who coordinated the symposium. Amjad, research and development fellow in the water science section at BF Goodrich, was a postdoctoral researcher at UB under Nancollas from 1976-79. Nancollas, also a professor of urology in the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Royal Society of Chemistry and the University of Wales. PSYCHOLOGY. ON NATIONAL COUNCIL: R. Lorraine Collins, senior research scientist at the Research Institute on Addictions (RIA) and research associate professor in the UB Department of Psychology, has been appointed to the National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The appointment, through November, 1997, was made by Donna Shalala, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. The 12-member council advises the Director of the NIH, reviews grant applications, and recommends action to stimulate additional research on drug abuse. MEDICINE. CHAIRS PEDIATRIC GROUP: Richard T. Sarkin, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics, has been elected chair of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association's Special Interest Group on Medical Student Education. The group provides a national forum for medical educators to exchange ideas and make recommendations on curricular structure and teaching methodologies for medical students. A UB faculty member since 1981, Sarkin is director of the Teaching Effectiveness Program in the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
