Reporter Volume 26, No.5 October 6, 1994 Cross Country The University at Buffalo's men's and women's cross country teams posted victories Saturday morning in rainy conditions at Akron Falls Park to defeat the University of Western Ontario. The Royals defeated the Mustangs 26-33 while the Bulls won 27-30. In the women's race, UB's Judith Novak finished first in 18:30.49. Even in the muddy conditions of the course, Novak's time was the second fastest on the course. Novak's time of 18:24 is the course record set last month. Buffalo's Nilam Shukla was fourth, the second UB finisher, with a personal best 19:07.86 while Stacey Strothmann finished sixth in 19:26.06 to round out the Royals' top three finishers. UB's Charley Moynihan won the men's race in 26:56.7. John Syrotynski was third in 27:03 and Chris Bossert sixth in 27:08. The Royals improved their record to 10-0 in dual meets. The Bulls are 4-5. Women's Soccer The Royals shutout visiting Gannon 5-0 in a driving rainstorm on Sept. 28. Dana Talerico scored two goals to lead UB. Joanna Tower and Kelly Starchok each added a goal and an assist in the rout of the Lady Knights. Goalkeeper Nikki Pittaro needed just two saves to register her first shutout of the season. On Saturday, the Royals fell at home to a tough Penn State squad 4-0. UB's record is now 4-4-1. They will face Michigan in their first season of women's soccer this Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m. Men's Soccer The Bulls dropped a pair of matches last week to make their record 5-4. On Tuesday, UB traveled to Canisius where they fell to the Golden Griffins 4-1. Fredrick Akosa scored the Bulls lone goal in the loss. Friday, the Bulls returned home to host Long Island University losing to the Blackbirds 3-2. Ediru Okpewho was instrumental on both UB goals scoring one and assisting on the other. Sotir Tanevski tallied the second UB goal, while goalkeeper Jay Palmer made nine saves. Volleyball Coach Bob Maxwell's squad picked up a five-game victory on the road Wednesday at Niagara. The Royals rallied from a two-games-to-one deficit to defeat the Purple Eagles 15-13, 13-15, 14-16, 15-5, 15-9. Candie Hirst led the Royals with 25 kills and 24 digs in the match. Laurie Santelli added 16 kills and 17 digs while Candi Sims tallied 46 assists and three service aces. Kathy Brinkworth had 14 kills and 10 blocks. Saturday, the Royals dropped a three-game decision at Cornell. Santelli accounted for 16 digs while Hirst had 13. The Royals are now 5-12 as they begin their second homestand of the season at Alumni Arena, hosting St. Francis (Pa.) Friday night at 7 p.m. and St. John's on Sunday at 1 p.m.
