September 29, 1994: Vol26n4: Sportsview: Football Bulls Victorious! The Bulls picked up their first-ever win in UB Stadium last Saturday with a 36-10 victory over the Wolves of Cheyney University, snapping an eight-game losing streak. UB scored on it's opening possession when freshman running back Tyler McDonnell scampered 19 yards around left end, capping a nine-play, 65-yard drive. Cheyney came right back with a 17-play, seven minute drive which resulted in a 31-yard field goal, cutting UB's margin to 7-3 with 5:22 left in the first quarter. A Mark Mozrall 27-yard field goal and a 23-yard scoring strike from QB Cliff Scott to brother Anthony gave the Bulls a 17-3 halftime advantage. Following a fumble recovery by UB's Terrence Fisher to open the second half, McDonnell ran for his second score of the afternoon, this time from eight yards out to give the Bulls a 24-3 lead. Cheyney got back in the game when quarterback Jonathan Flynn ran for a six-yard score with 10:23 remaining, but UB scored three plays later on a one-yard Brad Bess run, giving the Bulls a 30-10 advantage. The score was set up by Fisher's second fumble recovery on the day. UB closed the scoring when Mark Taylor scored his first career TD on a one-yard rush with 2:15 left in the game. McDonnell rushed for a game-high 113 yards and two TDs, while linebacker Pete Conley led all tacklers with 20. The junior also recorded a sack and two quarterback pressures in his finest outing in a Bulls' uniform. The Bulls return to action on October 8 in a 1:30 homecoming showdown against longtime rival Colgate University. Men's Soccer Charles Kadiri scored two goals to lead the Bulls to a 3-1 win at Siena Saturday, September 24. The Bulls are now 5-2 overall. Kadiri, a junior from Kogi, Imye, Nigeria who played on the Nigerian World University Games soccer team, got his first goal of the match with less than two minutes remaining in the first half on an assist from Chris Adams, tying the match at 1-1 at halftime. The Bulls tallied a pair in the final half as Ediru Okpewho netted his team leading fifth goal. Kadiri followed nine minutes later with his second goal assisted by Mike Bongino and Fredrick Akosa to UB the 3-1 edge. Goalkeeper Jay Palmer stopped 17 Siena shots to lead the Bulls. Kadiri, Okpewho and freshman Dan Ciolek are all tied for the team scoring lead with ten points apiece. Ciolek leads with four assists. Women's Soccer The Royals weekend saw them falling to a strong New Hampshire squad 4-0 on Saturday followed by a 2-2 tie with Siena the next day. Coach Ron Case's squad is 3-3-1. Melanie Hierl and Annamaria Gasbarra each scored for the Royals in the Siena match. Siena tied the match at 2-2 with 12 minutes left and neither team scored in the two 15 minute overtimes. UB outshot Siena 37-22. Goalkeeper Rachelle Galipeau played the entire match collecting 15 saves. Earlier in the week, the Royals fell at Canisius 2-1. All three goals were scored within the final three minutes. Cross Country The Royals won the team competition at the 20th Annual Western Invitational Cross Country Meet at Western Ontario. UB scored 92 points to second place McGill's 116 in the 16-team meet that included squads from both the United States and Canada. Eastern Michigan's Adele Rankin won the individual competition finishing the 5,000 meter course in 17:40.56. UB's Judith Novak led the Royals finishing seventh in 18:35.39. Stacey Strothmann's 18:55.38 was good for 12th and Nilam Shukla's 19:06.47 was 16th overall. On the men's side, the Bulls finished the 16-team meet ninth with 258 points. Central Michigan won the team competition with 58 points. The Bulls' top finisher was Chris Keenan who finished the 10,000 meter course in 33:31.17. Charlie Moynihan was the next highest finisher in 36th at 33:38.69. Volleyball Coach Bob Maxwell's women's volleyball team started the week off with a four-game win over crosstown Canisius at the Koessler Center 15-13, 13-15, 15-13, 15-13. The Royals then headed for Hamilton, New York and the Colgate Invitational Tournament. On Friday UB lost a four-game match to Manhattan and fell in three to Princeton. Saturday, the Royals rebounded to down Fordham in four games, 15-11, 15-6, 10-15, 15-6, before falling to the host Red Raiders in three games. UB finished fourth in the five-team round-robin event.
