September 22, 1994: Vol26n3: McLaughlin Group opens Speakers Series By MARY BETH SPINA News Bureau Staff It'll be "no holds barred" as members of the lively, entertaining McLaughlin Group take their show on the road to UB Oct. 5, as the first presentation of the 1994-95 edition of the Distinguished Speaker Series. The McLaughlin Group will appear at 8 p.m. in Alumni Arena on the North Campus. Now into its eighth year, the Distinguished Speaker Series is sponsored by UB and the Don Davis Auto World Lectureship Fund. The appearance of the McLaughlin Group is provided with the cooperation of WNED/Channel 17, which airs the PBS program at 8:30 p.m. on Fridays. The McLaughlin Group has been described by The New York Times as "five barking, squawking, ideologically split pundits who argue national and foreign affairs in a go-to-hell fashion." Appearing will be moderator and sometimes referee John McLaughlin, former Washington editor and columnist for The National Review; Fred Barnes, conservative senior editor of The New Republic, who also appears on CNN's "Crossfire;" Eleanor Clift, a liberal who serves as deputy Washington Bureau chief for Newsweek; Morton Kondracke, a moderate and executive editor and columnist for Capitol Hill's twice-weekly newspaper Roll Call, and Clarence Page, the 1989 Pulitzer-Prize winner for commentary, liberal columnist and member of the editorial board of The Chicago Tribune. The Distinguished Speakers Series will continue April 27, at 8 p.m. in the Center for the Arts on the North Campus with a presentation by scholar and journalist Garry Wills. A Pulitzer Prize winner, Wills is the author of "Lincoln at Gettysburg," "Under God," "Reagan's America," "Inventing America" and "The Kennedy Imprisonment." Tickets for both programs in the series are $7.50 for student; $18 for UB faculty, staff, UB Alumni Association members and senior citizens; and $22.50, general admission. For one event, prices are $5 for students; $12 for UB faculty, staff, UB Alumni Association members and senior citizens, and $15 for general admission.
