Reporter Volume 26, No.24 April 13, 1995 Mortar Board inducts new members The UB Launch Chapter of Mortar Board National Honor Society inducted 30 new members at a ceremony held March 27. The following juniors have been selected for this honor: Bruce Allen, Amy Bandolik, Daren Bryant, Andrea Clifford, Sarah Datz, James Domzalski, Vincent Dunleavy, Cassandra Francique, Kara Grosser, Holly Gurbacki. Richard Hayes, Michelle Ignaszak, Gretchen Imahori, Christopher Joseph, Monique Keith, Margaret Kirst, Kristin Kittle, Adrian Knight, Heidi Ludwig, Kara Millonzi. Margaret O'Connor, Sharon O'Neill, Marylisa Reynders, Scott Rybarczyk, Kerry Sheeley, Abby Singh, Julia Slack, Erin Tims, Arne van Leuken and Michael Zvolensky. Two faculty members also were inducted as honorary members: Charles Behling, Department of Psychology, and Stephen Kellogg, School of Management. Mortar Board is an honor society for college seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service during their undergraduate career. Started in 1918, the group has developed more than 200 chapters at colleges and universities throughout the United States. UB is one of the newest chapters of Mortar Board. Workshop to focus on student leadership Passing the Torch, a student leadership workshop aimed at bringing students together to discuss issues of leadership transition, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 13 in 330 Student Union. Sponsored by the Office of Student Life, the workshop will include a student panel presented by representatives of various clubs and organizations: Maggie O'Connor, Community Action Corps (CAC) president; Jason Kane, University Student Alumni Board (USAB) president; Jill Cole, Student Association (SA) vice president, 1995-96; Adrian Knight, Sub Board I, Inc. vice president; Hakeem Oseni, Spectrum editor-in-chief; Cassandra Francique, Black Student Union president; Bjorn DeBear, SA academic council coordinator; and Joanne Rinaldo, SA treasurer 1994-95. The panel, moderated by Debra Palka, assistant director of Alumni Relations, will discuss areas of organizational transition including: facing challenges, campus issues, utilizing resources and keeping records. Jones, a family physician and founder of Cinterandes USA, a non-profit organization that brings medical care to remote areas of Ecuador via a new mobile surgical unit, will be keynote speaker at the second annual "Women Physicians in Primary Care Conference," to be held on Saturday, April 22, at the Radisson Hotel & Suites, Airport, 4243 Genesee St., Cheektowaga. The program is designed to showcase to women medical students the variety of generalist career options that are available and to introduce students to outstanding role models in these fields. It is sponsored by the Primary Care Resource Center, the Graduate Medical Dental Education Consortium and the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo. In addition to the keynote address by Jones -- who also has established an international primary care exchange program for medical students and health professionals in Equador -- the conference will feature small group discussions on such topics as selecting a residency, sports medicine, managing career and relationships, and maintaining the balance between femininity and professionalism. Women's Club plans Spring Luncheon, installation April 29 The Women's Club of the University at Buffalo will have its Spring Luncheon Saturday, April 29 at 11 a.m., at the Center for the Arts. The program, presented by the UB Art Gallery, will include a show of works by UB Art Department students. Exhibited items will be offered for sale. The luncheon will be followed by the installation of officers for 1995-96, the Women's Club 50th anniversary year. The following officers will be installed: president, Janet Fedor; vice president, Ninfa Straubinger; treasurer, Lynn McFadden; recording secretary, Geraldine Ryder; corresponding secretary, Norma Zimmerman; members-at-large, Meena Rustgi; Barbara Paganelli; Dorothy Soong. All past UB Women's Club presidents and honorary presidents are invited to the spring luncheon in anticipation of the launching of the club's 50th anniversary year on Sunday, Sept. 17. The anniversary year will be commemorated in 1995-96 with a "Celebrate 50!" program of special activities. The chair for "Celebrate 50!" is Marilyn Ciancio; co-chairs are Anne Brody and Maria Schillo. Membership in the Women's Club is open to any woman who is interested in service to the university and the purposes of the Women's Club. 'Best New Journal' is edited by UB prof A journal co-edited by James J. Bono, assistant professor in the Department of History and the Department of Medicine, has received top honors from the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the Association of American Publishers. Configurations, A Journal of Literature, Science and Technology, co-edited by Bono, with Kenneth Knoespel of the Georgia Institute of Technology and Wilda Anderson of The Johns Hopkins University, was named Best New Journal in science/technology/medicine March 9. The journal, which began publication in 1993, is devoted to cultural studies of science, technology and medicine. It is the official publication of the Society for Literature and Science (SLS) with an international membership of nearly 1,000. Bono has been president of the organization since 1993. His book, The Word of God and the Languages of Man: Interpreting Nature in Early Modern Science and Medicine, will be published by the University of Wisconsin Press in the next few months. Bono who received his A.B. degree from Fordham College of Fordham University, received his M.A. and Ph.D. in the History of Science from Harvard University. He came to UB in 1984.
