Reporter Volume 26, No.23 April 6, 1995 Ben and Jerry's "business mastermind" to speak April 7 in Center for the Arts Fred "Chico" Lager, former president and chief executive officer of Ben & Jerry's Homemade, Inc. will discuss his new book, "Ben and Jerry's: The Inside Scoop," and the eccentric business venture that inspired it at 7:30 p.m. -- ice cream will be served at 6:30 p.m. -- on Friday, April 7, in the Center for the Arts on the UB North Campus. Lager's lecture will kick off UB's annual open house for freshmen admitted for the fall 1995 semester. It is sponsored by the UB Office of Student Life and the university's honor societies. Lager joined Ben and Jerry's in 1982, when it was a $1 million "store-front" business, and helped to build it into the "$150 million, publicly held ice cream empire" that it is today. During his lecture, he will discuss how Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield were able to remain true to their social and political vision while creating a successful business with a conscience. Born and raised in New York City, Lager received a bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont and an M.B.A. from the University of Southern California. He remains on the board of directors at Ben and Jerry's, and is the director of Working Assets Funding Services, a San Francisco telecommunications and financial services company. Tickets are $3 and can be purchased at the Center for the Arts Box Office, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, or through Ticket Master.
