Reporter Volume 26, No.20 March 9, 1995 A grand jury investigation has begun and charges could be filed soon in connection with a vicious assault two years ago that left a UB student with permanent injuries. The young woman, who has been publicly identified only as Kim, still suffers hearing loss, continued weakness in one of her arms and has trouble reading as a result of her injuries. Authorities believe a man who already is in jail for another crime is responsible for the fall 1992 attack on the young woman. The victim, who was 21 and at UB junior at the time, was beaten into unconsciousness and may have been raped in the Sept. 5, 1992 attack, which occurred in the first-floor Lisbon Avenue flat she shared with two other UB students. The victim had returned home about midnight from a party, police say, when someone apparently broke into her apartment in the early morning hours and brutally attacked her. She was found the next morning, unconscious and lying in her bed in a pool of blood, by her roommates, who had returned home several hours after the assault. The attack left the victim in critical condition. She remained unconscious for several days, and weeks later was able to speak only a few words. A native of Long Island, she was transferred to a long-term care facility in Philadelphia, and within a year was back home with her parents, where she attended community college and continued to receive physical therapy.
