Reporter Volume 26, No.20 March 9, 1995 Director to screen three South African films at Center for the Arts March 20-21 South African film director James A. Sey of Vista University, Benoni, Republic of South Africa, will screen three independent South African films at UB March 20-21. Among them is "Mapantsula" by Oliver Schmitz, (March 21, 4 p.m., Center for the Arts Screening Room), the first anti-apartheid feature film by, for and about South Africans. It was filmed in 1989 inside Soweto and scored to the urban beat of "Township Jive." Also on the program is "Shot Down" by Andrew Worsdale, (March 20, 7:30 p.m., Center for the Arts Screening Room) a film that, according to Sey, is like "Mapantsula" in that it exploits, but is ultimately determined and constrained by, the generic conventions of the Hollywood noir film. The third film is "The Processed Image," (March 21, 6:30 p.m., 20 Knox Hall), a compilation of work by several directors, including Sey. Discussions will follow each screening. All films are free of charge and open to the public. The program is sponsored by the UB Council for International Studies and Programs and the UB departments of African American Studies, Media Study and English.
