March 2, 1995: Vol26n19: Art majors design a mural for Child Advocacy Center Children who visit the Child Advocacy Center in downtown Buffalo are now greeted with a bright, uplifting mural when they walk through the front door, courtesy of two UB art majors. Rachel Pietrzykowski and Duane Schneider designed and painted the mural to provide a happy, non-threatening view of life to the children who visit the center, which helps victims of incest and sexual abuse from infancy to age 18. "We wanted something really positive and optimistic," says Jen E. Henry, center director. They (the children) have been through some very scary stuff. We wanted something multicultural, with a feel of the city as well as the country." The students installed the six panels in the waiting room just in time for the holidays. The mural is the first thing that children see when they enter the center, located at 560 Delaware Ave. The summer scene depicts a red barn, an orange apartment house and lots of children enjoying the outdoors. A girl on rollerblades on an urban sidewalk, while a boy swings from a tire into a pond filled with flamingos. It also features lots of animals: there's a giant turtle with flowers on its back, an oversized hippo jumping through a candy-cane-striped hoop. All are arranged against a green-grass background.
