March 2, 1995: Vol26n19: Series presents exhibits, talk on contemporary architecture By LISA WILEY News Bureau Staff Ken Greenberg, former director of the Division of Architecture and Urban Design for the City of Toronto's Department of Planning and Development, will discuss "Toronto: Confronting the Regional City" on March 22, as part of the Spring lecture & exhibition series for the School of Architecture and Planning. Several exhibitions are scheduled in the James Dyett Exhibition Hall in Hayes Hall on the South Campus, including "Construction, Intention, Detail," an exhibit of the works of five young Swiss architects. All events will take place on the South Campus and are free of charge and open to the public. MARCH Continuing through March 24 James Dyett Exhibition Hall, 3rd floor, Hayes Hall "Construction, Intention, Detail: Five Projects from Five Swiss Architects" Gallery hours: Mondays 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The five projects examine the means through which, or by which, construction expresses, enriches or contradicts an underlying architectural intent. The works share a concern for the combination of the physical dimension of architecture with the genesis of a building. The young architects and works represented include Herzog & de Meuron, "Goetz Collection, Munich;" Burkhalter & Sumi, "Turbenthal Field Depot;" Meili & Peter, "School for Wood Technology;" Diener & Diener, "Office Building at Picassolatz," and Peter Zumthor, "Housing for the Elderly in Chuc, Switzerland." This exhibition has been presented at Princeton University, Catholic University, Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania, among others. Wednesday, March 22, 5:30 p.m., 301 Crosby Hall Lecture by Ken Greenberg: "Toronto: Confronting the Regional City" Greenberg's firm, Berridge, Lewinberg and Greenberg Ltd., has focused on the redevelopment of inner-city areas. He has taught at the University of Toronto, York University and the University of Montreal. He recently completed a number of studies, including "Reurbanization Guidelines for Metropolitan Toronto, Shaping Growth in the Greater Toronto Area" for the Province of Ontario, "Living Downtown" for the City of Toronto, and "Transportation 2000" for metropolitan Toronto. He has lectured widely in North America and Europe.
