March 2, 1995: Vol26n19: SportsView Swimming The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams captured their first Mid-Continent Conference titles Saturday at UB's Alumni Arena Natatorium. The Bulls took first place with 815 points to easily outdistance Eastern Illinois' second place showing of 663. Western Illinois was third at 654 followed by Central Connecticut State (481), Valparaiso (183) and Northeastern Illinois (137). The Royals won by a slim margin holding off Western Illinois 771-756. Eastern Illinois was third at 563 with Valparaiso (486), Central Connecticut State (392) and Northeastern Illinois (157) completing the field. The Bulls swept all the Mid-Continent awards as selected by the coaches. Kevin Remaly and Jamie Playfair were named Speedo co-Swimmers of the Year while Darren Milun captured the Newcomer of the Year. Buffalo's Justin Monin won the Speedo Diver of the Year award and Budd Termin earned Coach of the Year honors. Buffalo's Suzanne Bohnel took the Speedo Women's Swimmer of the Year award with Alexandra Barrera earning the Mid-Con's Newcomer of the Year award. Karen Lasky received the Speedo Diver of the Year award for Buffalo. Western Illinois' Jerry Champer was selected as Speedo Women's Coach of the Year. The Royals set three records in Saturday night's competition over the three day event. Barrera broke her own record in the 1650 freestyle finishing first in 17:20.77. The time was also a Mid-Continent Meet record. Barrera followed that with a record setting performance in the 200 backstroke taking the event in 2:04.94. Remaly's 200 breaststroke time of 2:07.24 also set a Bulls' record. He finished second in the event to Western Illinois' Mike Uyder in 2:06.83. Korry Miller and Playfair finished one-two in the 200 backstroke with Miller touching first in 1:53.03 and Playfair in 1:53.06. The Bulls swept all five relay events during the three-day meet highlighted by Remaly, Miller, Playfair and Milun taking the 400 freestyle relay in 3:06.27. Men's Basketball The Bulls fell to Western Illinois 81-62 in their only action during the week. Myron Banks had 17 points and tied for tops with six rebounds. The Bulls were held to just 32.4 percent shooting. UB's final two home regular season games against Eastern Illinois (Feb. 27) and Mid-Continent Conference leader Valparaiso (Mar. 1) will determine the seedings for the league tournament which begins on Friday, March 3 and continues Sunday and Tuesday. Women's Basketball UB's defense shut down their opponents last week to keep the Royals in the race for the Mid-Continent women's championship. The Royals handed Western Illinois a 64-49 defeat limiting the Westerwinds to just 23.8 percent shooting while UB shot a season-best 68.6 from the floor. Brenna Doty and Anne Gallagher led the team with 16 points apiece. The Royals followed that with a 71-48 pasting of Missouri-Kansas City as UB held the Roos to just 26.2 percent from the floor. Natosha Cummings' 15 points led the way while Nicole Blakeslee and Doty added 12 points apiece. Blakeslee also set career-highs with 10 rebounds and nine blocked shots. UB enters the Mid-Continent Conference tournament this weekend following the regular season finales vs. Eastern Illinois and Valparaiso. Like the men's tournament, the Mid-Con tourney will feature the league's top six teams playing at campus sites. The first and second place teams earn byes and will play at home in the second round. The women's tournament begins Saturday, March 4 and continues next Monday and Wednesday. Indoor Track & Field The Royals captured their first Mid-Continent Conference Championship on Saturday with their win at the conference meet at Eastern Illinois. Judith Novak earned the Athlete of the Year award with her victories in the 3,000 run in 10:04.34 and 5,000 run in 17:30.74. Lisa Kragbe received the league's Newcomer of the Year award and Dick Barry earned Coach of the Year recognition. Kragbe won the 400 meters in 59.93 and finished second in the 55-meter hurdles in a school record 8.42. The Bulls finished seventh in the eight-team event with Chris Keenan finished fourth in the 3,000 in a school-record 8:42.3. Fumu Gakodi set a school mark in the 400 in 48.95 and Eric Fischlein's 6.51 in the 55 meters also set a UB standard. Wrestling Charlie Cheney's grapplers finished their dual season with a 27-13 loss at Duquesne to conclude the year 0-16. Brian Dowdall (118), Rob Pavis (134), Rennie Crisafulli (142) and Tim Fallon (150) earned victories for the Bulls as they head for the East Coast Wrestling Championships at Rider University this weekend. Winners of the ECWA matches advance to the NCAA Championships. Men's Tennis The Bulls dropped a pair of matches to open the spring season falling to St. Bonaventure 4-3 and Duquesne 6-1. Vinay Rajehdran was victorious in both matches defeating his opponents at number six singles.
