March 2, 1995: Vol26n19: HONORS HEALTH RELATED PROFESSIONS DEAN'S AWARD WINNER: Robert L. Klick, associate professor in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science, was the 1994 recipient of the Dean's Award of the School of Health Related Professions. He was cited for outstanding service to the university and his profession, and for excellence in teaching. The Dean's Award is supported by funds donated to the UB Foundation by Albert Rekate, professor emeritus, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Rekate was instrumental in establishing the School of Health Related Professions and served as acting dean. Klick, who came to UB as an instructor in the former Department of Medical Technology, previously worked as a research biochemist at Beaumont Research Laboratories at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Cleveland. He received a B.S. degree in biology and an M.S. in biomedical biology from Cleveland State University and did graduate work in experimental pathology at the Roswell Park Division of UB. MICROBIOLOGY APPOINTED TO NIH STUDY SECTION: Philip LoVerde, professor of microbiology at UB, has been appointed a member of the Tropical Medicine and Parasitology Study Section, Division of Research Grants, National Institutes of Health. LoVerde joined the faculty of the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences as an assistant professor in 1981 after serving on the faculty at Purdue University. He has performed distinguished research in parasitology for the past 23 years, focusing on schistosomes. These parasites are the cause of a chronic and often fatal illness endemic in at least 72 countries. A recipient of the Henry Baldwin Ward Medal, highest award presented by the American Society of Parasitologists, LoVerde has spoken worldwide and has more than 100 publications. He has served as editor of Experimental Parasitology and as a member of the editorial board of Microbial Pathogenesis. MEDICINE ELECTED SOCIETY PRESIDENT: Maria V. Klaus, clinical assistant professor of dermatology and chief of dermatology at Veterans Hospital, has been elected president of the Buffalo-Rochester Dermatological Society. The society provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information while providing continu- ing medical education for area dermatologists.
