February 16, 1995: Vol26n17: Jamestown star among top football players coming to UB By STEVE COX Reporter Staff The UB football Bulls will have several Western New York high school standouts on their fall roster, including Jamestown High School star running back David Hinson. He and eight others have signed National Letters of Intent to attend UB next fall. Hinson, a running back who was named the Buffalo News and the New York State high school player of the year last year, picked UB over rival Division I-AA national champs Youngstown State after meeting with UB's new head coach, Craig Cirbus. Led by Hinson's running performances, Jamestown was 13-0 last year, winning the Class A state championship. At 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, Hinson became the first player in Western New York high school history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season (2,260). He also holds WNY single season records for 100-yard games (12), carries (290), touchdowns (35) and scoring (212 points). Cirbus signed several other Western New York student-athletes, including Amherst High quarterback Erik Rusin and offensive lineman Tom Brown. Rusin holds several Amherst passing records and led the Amherst Tigers to the Section VI Class B-1 championship in 1993. Depew running back Glenn Jackson and West Irondequoit wide receiver Kali Watkins will also join the Bulls offense. Coming to UB from out of the area are quarterback Kevin McGriff of Nassau County Community College, offensive linemen Joe Hattendorf of Gov. Mifflin High School in Shanting, Pa. and defensive end Eric Campbell of Elyria Catholic in Elyria, Pa. Huge offensive guard Vinnie Card of Rome, N.Y. will be rejoining former high school teammate Vito Daniello, a Bulls' defensive back. Card, a 6-5, 280-pound offensive left tackle, was twice a first team all-star and his Rome Free Academy Black Knights won the Section 3, Class AA title in 1993. Recruiting will continue through April 1, the NCAA deadline for signing high school seniors, according to Cirbus.
