February 16, 1995: Vol26n17: Visiting scholars at home in Guest Quarters Clement Hall is now a temporary "home" for visiting scholars, faculty, researchers and lecturers from all over the world. The Office of International Education is offering a new service that provides low-cost temporary housing on campus for the visiting scholars. Scholars from Egypt, Syria, China, Korea, Latvia, Poland, Israel, Thailand, France and Norway are currently living in the University Guest Quarters. An entire ninth-floor wing of Clement has been renovated, including carpeting, and furnishings that include desks, armchairs, color television sets, refrigerators, lamps, double beds, phones, clock radios and data connection. Fifteen rooms have been made available and can be rented for periods of less than a month. Other rooms can be rented for stays of from one month to a year. All of the rooms available for long-term stays have already been reserved for the first year of operation. The Guest Quarters also has a fully equipped kitchen with stove, microwave and a lounge with a TV, a VCR and a stereo system. A multilingual concierge, Monica Hornman, is on hand to welcome the visitors, help them get settled and become oriented to Buffalo and the university community. Help is also available for initiating phone or data service, establishing bank accounts and using local transportation. The service not only helps the scholars, but is also a convenience to departments sponsoring the visitors.
