February 9, 1995: Vol26n16: HUBNET HUBNET How do you spell electronic health information? The answer is HUBNET (Hospitals and University at Buffalo Resource NETwork), an extraordinary selection of health-related information resources for UB faculty, staff, and students as well as for those affiliated with the eight local teaching hospitals and other participating organizations that comprise the WNY Health Sciences Consortium. HUBNET, a result of a collaborative project of the Library Consortium of Health Institutions in Buffalo, can be searched on-site at the Health Sciences Library, at one of the sponsoring hospital libraries, or remotely. The array of HUBNET resources is truly impressive. HUBNET's core databases which include MEDLINE, CancerLIT, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Health Planning and Administration, AIDSLINE, BIOETHICSLINE, and Current Contents: Clinical Medicine, Life Sciences, Agriculture and Biology, provide citations to hundreds of thousands of journal articles. Full text sources are also available, depending on your means of connecting to the network. These include journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, clinical manuals such as the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, and drug information resources such as the Physician's Desk Reference and the USP Advice for Patients. Expert systems such as AMA Practice Parameters (which provides standards formulated by medical experts to ensure quality care) and Quick Medical Reference (which offers diagnostic assistance in Internal Medicine) can also be accessed. HUBNET further provides an entrance ramp to the Internet as well as an electronic mail component. During the Spring semester the staff of the Health Sciences Library will be offering a series of one hour seminars on accessing and searching HUBNET. You can register for a HUBNET class either by stopping by the Health Sciences Library's Reference Desk or calling 829-3900.
