February 9, 1995: Vol26n16: 1994 Service Excellence Awards At an assembly of University Services employees on Friday, Feb. 3, Senior Vice President Robert J. Wagner presided at the presentation of the division's 1994 Service Excellence Awards. He called this year's three awards and one honorable mention "indicative of the kind of thought and effort that go into University Services' work." Ronald Nayler, associate vice president for university facilities, presented an award to the university's CES/Way project team for work on a large-scale energy conservation program that is expected to save UB $3 million a year. Team members, all from University Facilities, included Phil Cahil, Tom Chalapka, Russ Devans, Mike Dupre, Steve Englert, Chuck Hutchison, Ken Kavanagh, Jim Korta, Dave Krawczyk, Herb Lydell, Cliff Martin, Joe Metzger, Bob Puleo, John Russo, Walter Simpson, Fred Smeader, and Kevin Thompson. Leonard Snyder, associate vice president and controller, and Hinrich Martens, associate vice president for computing and information technology, presented an award to a team from the Offices of Financial Aid and Administrative Computing Services for a federal electronic data exchange initiative that has greatly improved the speed with which students and their parents can receive information about financial aid awards. The project reduced waiting time from as much as five weeks down to two business days. Project team members included Andy Sprague and Chris Turton from the Office of Financial Aid and Frank Guzzetta, Richard Papaj, and Paul Viapiano from Administrative Computing Services. nyder also presented an award to a project team from UB's State Purchasing Department for developing a speed order system that will allow departments to expedite high volume purchase orders for items costing less than $500. Speed order project team members, all from the Purchasing Department, included Terry Bell, Helen Gaiter, John Grabowski, Judy Miller, Pat Nowicki, and Sandy Russo. Nayler presented an honorable mention citation to a group from University Facilities for two staff training initiatives, one to improve workplace skills, the other leading to the GED diploma. The workplace skills team included Don Erb, David Lytle, Gemma Moell, Barbara Christy, and Pauline Eshelman; the GED project was the responsibility of Jill Uebelhoer. At the end of the award ceremony, Wagner presented Associate Vice President Carole Petro with a UB 20-year service recognition pin and a certificate of appreciation for her accomplishments during those 20 years.
