February 2, 1995: Vol26n15: SPORTSVIEW MEN'S BASKETBALL The Bulls raised their record to 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the Mid-Continent Conference with a split of their games over the week. UB first defeated Western Illinois 92-65 thanks to a big first half that saw the club open a 46-26 lead at the intermission. Freshman Mike Martinho led UB in scoring with 20 points while Rasaun Young had 19 and Myron Banks 14. The club then hit the road and, in a showdown for first place in the conference, lost at Valparaiso 64-63. Early foul trouble and a scoring drought late in the game were too much for the Bulls to overcome. Young led all scorers with 22 points and nine rebounds. Martinho added 15 points and Modie Cox contributed 11. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL The Royals also split their games last week, losing to Western Illinois before beating Valparaiso. UB is now 11-5 overall and 6-2 in the conference. Anne Gallagher led the Royals in their win over Valparaiso with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor. Charissa Gardner and Brenna Doty each had 10 points for UB. The Royals limited Valparaiso to just 29 percent shooting for the game. WOMEN'S SWIMMING The Royals fell to a strong Indiana University (Pa.) team 133-129. IUP took first in the final event of the meet, the 400 free relay, to post the victory. Freshman Alexandra Barrera took the 1,000 free in 10:35.16 for UB. She also won the 100 back in 1:01.11 and the 200 back in 2:10.01. Martie Duffett was a double winner for UB, taking the 200 breaststroke in 2:30.71 and the 200 butterfly in 2:14.21.
