January 26, 1995: Vol26n14: Experts to meet here for mini conference on aging By LOIS BAKER News Bureau Staff Experts from across the nation will convene in Buffalo Feb. 3 for a one-day White House Conference on Aging mini-conference, "Maximizing Independence for Older Adults with Disabilities." The event, to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Hyatt Regency Buffalo, is sponsored by the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Aging at UB and the Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center in Downey, Calif. Recommendations from the mini-conference, which will be included in the 1995 White House Conference on Aging final report, will help guide national policy on aging in the 1990s Pre-registration is necessary for this event, which is open to anyone interested in aging and disability issues. The fee is $30. Co-chairs are William C. Mann, director of UB's Center for Assistive Technology and chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy, and Bryan J. Kemp, director of the Research Training Center on Aging with a Disability at Ranchos Los Amigos. Discussion will revolve around two video case studies on the topics, "Aging With a Disability" and "Aging Into Disabilities. Researchers making presentations at the mini-conference represent the New York State Office for the Advocate, American Society on Aging, Northwestern University Rehabilitation Engineering Research Program and Prosthetics Research Laboratory, University at Buffalo, University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Southern California, Center for Accessible Housing at North Carolina State University. Also, the American Occupational Therapy Association, American Academy of Home Care Physicians, American Association of Retired Persons, National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research, University of Minnesota, University of Rochester and the Center for Collaborative Research at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. The mini-conference is funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, and the U.S. Departments of Education and Health and Human Services.
