January 26, 1995: Vol26n14: HONORS PUBLIC SAFETY HONORS FOR OFFICERS: UB Public Safety Officers have received recognition including Officer of the Year awards for acts of heroism or prevention of injury or violence to members of the UB community and Meritorious Service Awards for implementation of new crime prevention programs. Honored as Officer of the Year for 1992 was Officer James Caputi, for his actions on March 20, 1992 in Red Jacket Quad when a male student was attempting to injure two female students with a knife. Caputi subdued the suspect and took him into custody. The suspect was indicted by a grand jury on charges including attempted murder. Honored as Officer of the Year for 1993 was Officer Sean Phillips. Following a rash of room burglaries in Ellicott, descriptions of a suspect were distributed. On March 23, 1993, students observed a person matching that description in Porter Hall. Public Safety Officers arrived at the scene and Phillips spotted the suspect walking along the Core Road. When the suspect fled, Phillips caught and arrested him. The suspect, charged with numerous felonies, was convicted and sentenced to 2-4 years in state prison. Officer Christopher Dantis, who assisted Officer Phillips, received a Meritorious Service Award. Officers David Urbanek, Louis Rossi and Michael Virchau all received Meritorious Service Awards for community policing, including educational programs, initiating safety escort services, a crime awareness program, and installation of an internal cable TV system in residence halls. MEDICINE PRESIDENT-ELECT OF PEDIATRIC SOCIETY: F. Bruder Stapleton, A. Conger Goodyear professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics in the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has been elected president-elect of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology. Stapleton, pediatrician-in-chief at The Children's Hospital of Buffalo, will assume the presidency in May. A fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Stapleton was chair of the Sub-Board of Nephrology of the American Board of Pediatrics in 1993. He is a member of the American Pediatric Society and a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Examiners.
