January 26, 1995: Vol26n14: OBITUARIES Charles J. Tanner, surgeon Services were held Dec. 10 for Charles J. Tanner, 77, a cardiovascular surgeon and former president of Mercy Hospital, who died Dec. 7 after a brief illness. Tanner, a graduate of St. Bonaventure University, received his medical degree from the University of Buffalo and was a former president of the UB Medical Alumni Association. A Hornell native, Tanner received the Carnegie Medal for heroism in 1935 after rescuing victims of a flood. He served as a colonel in the Army Medical Corps in 1944 and was commander of a military hospital in Italy during World War II. He served his surgical residency at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and became a fellow in cardiovascular surgery at UB, beginning his practice in 1950. A general surgeon at Mercy, Sisters, Our Lady of Victory and Millard Fillmore Hospitals, he was plant surgeon for Bethlehem Steel, Electro Refractories, Buffalo Brakebeam, Buffalo Hammer Mill and the Penn Central Railroad. He served on the board of Trocaire College and was a member of many professional medical societies. Survivors include his wife, Nina; a daughter, Susan Jarvis; a son, Robert, of Portland, Maine; a sister, Ruth Morris of Williamsville and five grandchildren. Andrew V. Tramont, physician Services were held Dec. 24 for Andrew V. Tramont, 74, a family practice physician in Clarence for more than 40 years and a clinical assistant professor emeritus of family medicine at the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Tramont died Dec. 21 after a brief illness. A founder of Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Amherst, Tramont was an attending physician at Millard Fillmore Hospital for more than 40 years. A graduate of the University of Buffalo and New York Medical College in New York City, he was an Army veteran of World War II who fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Tramont, a life member of the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Family Practice, was past president of the Erie County Chapter of the New York State Academy of Family Practice. He was a member of the Medical Society of the State of New York and the Baccelli Medical Club. Survivors include his wife, Mary Dell; three daughters, Nanette and Teresa of Clarence and Lynette Lorenzen of Miami; two sons, Andrew V. Jr. of Miami and James of Clarence; four sisters, Rose Cavaretta of Amherst, Josephine Gerace, Lucille Chiarmonte and Rita Gilliam; a brother, J. Jerry of St. Louis and eight grandchildren. Justin R. Van Ness, student Services were held Jan. 19 for Justin R. Van Ness, 25, of West Falls, a UB junior majoring in archeology who died Jan. 14 in a kayaking accident in Cazenovia Creek. Van Ness had returned from an archeology dig in Greece in August after spending six months on the site. He had traveled to India, Thailand, Nepal, England, Scotland and Italy. Van Ness taught fourth grade religious education at St. George's Roman Catholic Church in West Falls and was a volunteer at the City Mission in Buffalo. He is survived by his parents, Trevor R. and Gloria Van Ness of West Falls; two sisters, Treva Van Ness of Holland and Taylor Van Ness of West Falls and his grandmother, Helen Kusmierczyk of Harrisburg, Pa.
