December 1, 1994: Vol26n12: HONORS BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES ON NIH STUDY SECTION: Bruce J. Nicholson, associate professor of biological sciences, has accepted an invitation to serve as a member of the Cellular Biology and Physiology Study Section, Division of Research Grants, for the National Institutes of Health. Members are selected for demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline. Study sections review grant applications, make recommendations to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board, and survey the status of research in their fields of science. PHYSICS TO RECEIVE JEWEL OF INDIA: Piyare L. Jain, professor of physics at UB, has been selected to receive the Hind Rattan (Jewel of India) the Indian government's highest award to non-resident Indians. It is given for outstanding achievements, contributions and service by the NRI Society of India. A UB faculty member for 40 years, Jain will receive the award at the 10th International Congress of NRI's meeting in New Delhi this month. For the past decade, Jain has been using heavy-ion beams from Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island and CERN, the world's largest particle accelerator in Geneva, Switzerland, in the search for the Quark Gluon Plasma, the hottest research topic for high-energy physicists in the world today. His research also includes work on a potential method for early detection and therapy for breast cancer. A fellow of the American Physical Society, he has been a Fulbright scholar and the recipient of a UUP Excellence Award. MEDICINE NAMED TO NIH STUDY SECTION: Paul R. Knight, professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology in the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has been named to the Surgery, Anesthesiology and Trauma Study Section of the Division of Research Grants of the National Institutes of Health. A UB faculty member since 1992, Knight is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Anesthesiology. He has written or co-written more than 60 articles for scholarly journals, and more than 100 book chapters. He also has served as a reviewer for the journal Anesthesiology and has made more than 40 presentations at professional conferences.
