Reporter Volume 26, No.1 September 1,1994 Summer vanishes and you are suddenly transported to the hustle and bustle of campus life. New students, staff and faculty walk around dazed and confused. Even campus "old-timers" feel somewhat disoriented! Let WINGS, UB's online campus-wide information system, provide you with the information you need to get a good start on the fall semester. By logging on to your University at Buffalo E-mail account you will find a wide range of campus information that Jim Gerland from the Computing Center and a variety of campus "information providers" have been busily placing on the system in recent months. Feel like attending a sporting event? Check out the "Athletic & Recreation" menu. Need to find a departmental phone number? The University Directory "blue pages" are now on WINGS. Want to find a part-time job on campus? Select the "Employment and Career Placement" menu. Need to find out about the various services offered by the Computing Center on campus? Try the "Computing Resources" menu. The list of campus resources available at a keystroke goes on and on and includes: Public Safety information, tutorial services offered by the Learning Center, information on group counseling, Faculty Senate minutes, electronic journals produced on campus, alumni activities, computerized databases available in the University Libraries, even campus publications such as the newspaper you are holding in your hands at this very moment! The beauty of WINGS is that not only does it give you a sense of the flavor of the campus (hot and spicy to be sure), it also launches you into Cyberspace! But we will leave that to future columns. You will also find that WINGS can look and act differently depending on how you log on. That, too, we will cover in future columns. But today, for WINGS beginners, we recommend that you start with the menu-driven, user-friendly Gopher version. All UB E-mail account users need to do is type wings at the system prompt and select the appropriate menu options. For information on obtaining an E-mail account or connecting to WINGS, consult the Computing Center Help Desk at 645-3542. If you have information or a service you would like to share with the UB community via WINGS, contact the WINGS staff at WINGS@WINGS.buffalo.edu or 645-3557. -Gemma DeVinney and Loss Peque
