Reporter Volume 26, No.1 September 1,1994 Clifford B. Wilson, associate vice president for student affairs, has named John Grela acting director and John Woods acting assistant director of UB's Department of Public Safety. Grela, a UB employee since 1972, previously served as associate director of public safety since 1991. He earned a bachelor of science degree from UB in 1974 while serving as night manager of Norton Union, and joined the Department of Public Safety as a patrolman later that year. In 1977 Grela was named assistant to the director in charge of all business operations, personnel payroll and budget, and in 1981 his duties were expanded to include supervision of the department's seven investigators, as well as all major and ongoing investigations. He is a member of UB's Labor Management Health Safety, Parking and Traffic Safety and Handicap Accessibility committees. An arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau of WNY and the National Arbitration Association, he also serves on the Erie County Traffic Safety Committee, the International Chiefs of Police Association and the Erie County Judges and Chiefs Association. Woods, who joined UB in 1974 as a patrolman, was promoted to lieutenant in 1980. In 1989 he accepted a position as interim director of Public Safety at SUNY College at New Paltz,where he served for six months before returning to UB. He received his undergraduate degree from Northeast Louisiana State, and holds a master's degree in sociology from UB. For the past five years, Woods has been in charge of UB's crime prevention programs. He is responsible for community policing programs in residence halls and on the spine. He is a member of the WNY Crime Prevention Association and the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Officials.
