Reporter Volume 26, No.1 September 1,1994 DENTAL SCHOOL RECEIVES HONORARY DEGREE: Robert E. Baier, professor of biomaterials in the UB School of Dental Medicine and director of the Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on Biosurfaces at UB, has been awarded an honorary degree from Lund University in Sweden. He received the title of doctor of odontology, honoris causa, at Lund's commencement ceremony on May 27. A UB faculty member since the early 1970s, Baier has made many contributions to the understanding of material biocompatibility and the role of surface properties. A founding member and past president of the Society for Biomaterials, he is a founding fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. COMMUNICATION WINs HUMANITARIAN AWARD: Gerald M. Goldhaber, associate professor of communication at UB, and his wife, Marilyn, have received the 1994 Humanitarian Award from Hineni of Florida, Inc. The Goldhabers were recognized for their financial support of Hineni, an international, non-profit organization dedicated to locating children who have been kidnapped or victimized in some way by cults. The group works within the law to locate the children, remove them from the cults, deprogram them and return them to their families. A former chair of the Department of Communication at UB, Goldhaber has written or edited 11 books in the field of communication. NUCLEAR MEDICINE ELECTED FELLOW: Joseph A. Prezio, clinical professor and chair of the Department of Nuclear Medicine in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sci-been elected a fellow of the American College of Nuclear Physicians, a national organization of nuclear medicine physicians. The designation of fellow is attained through rigorous review of a nuclear physician's scholarly and community activities, continuing education and special certification by the American Board of Nuclear Medicine. A UB faculty member since 1971, Prezio also serves as director of the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging center.
