Reporter Volume 25, No.9 October 28, 1993 SOCIAL WORK WINS GOSNELL SCHOLARSHIP: Sharon L. Jimerson, a student in the UB School of Social Work, has been awarded a Gosnell Memorial Scholarship from the National Association of Social Workers. The $4,000 scholarship is awarded to a qualified student who has worked with Native American or Hispanic populations. Jimerson, who is a case manager with child and family services with the Seneca Nation in Gowanda, has worked with Seneca Nation residents for more than a decade. A resident of the Allegany Indian Reservation, she is pursuing a master's degree in social work from UB. MEDICAL ILLUSTRATION WINS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: Pioneering medical illustrator Melford (Mel) D. Diedrick, director of medical illustration at the University at Buffalo from 1934 until his retirement in 1977, has received the Association of Medical Illustrators' prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Diedrick is a founding member of the association, which was chartered in 1945. Currently a resident of Queenstown, Md., Diedrick graduated in 1932 from what is now the Rochester Institute of Technology. After two years at The Johns Hopkins University, he came to UB, where he provided illustrations for The Buffalo Physician, the alumni magazine of the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and for clinicians and others in the field of medicine who needed his unique service. In the 1950s, he created illustrations for a weekly television series, "Modern Medicine" and for The Buffalo Evening News' weekly magazine feature, "The Way to Better Health and a Longer Life." Diedrick was a member of the Continuing Education Board of Maryvale High School and an early supporter of, and violinist with, the Cheektowaga Community Symphony Orchestra. He was also president of the orchestra's board of directors. He served as president of the non-profit Honeoye Lake Watershed Association, whose purpose was to protect aquatic biology. The seventh medical illustrator to receive the AMI Lifetime Achievement Award, Diedrick is remembered by colleagues and friends in Buffalo as a talented artist and man of great wit and humor. DENTAL MEDICINE GOLD MEDAL WINNER: Robert J. Genco, distinguished professor and internattionally known dental researcher at UB, has received the American Academy of Periodontology's Gold Medal. The highest award given by the 6,400-member academy, the Gold Medal is presented annually to recognize outstanding contributions in the field of periodontics. It is funded by the John O. Butler Co. Genco, who has conducted pioneering research on caries and periodontal disease for the past two decades, received the honor at the academy's 79th annual meeting, held on Oct. 5 in Chicago. Genco is director of the Buffalo Periodontal Disease Research Center, one of five national centers to evaluate clinical advances in periodontology. The author of more than 200 scientific articles, Genco is editor of the Journal of Periodontology and a member of the editorial boards of several other journals. He received the American Dental Association's Medal for Excellence in Dental Research two years ago. A UB faculty member in the School of Dental Medicine since 1974, he received a dental degree from UB and doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. Architecture Named Universal Design Faculty: Edward Steinfeld, professor of architecture, has been awarded a $5,000 stipend as a Universal Design Education Project Faculty, one of only 14 such designations in the country. The project seeks to stimulate innovation in design curriculum leading to buildings, environments and products that further the aims of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fair Housing Amendments Act, which together extend accessibility into every realm of the built environment, both public and private. Steinfeld and co-leaders Gary Day, Abir Mullick and three other UB faculty to be announced, may all use the Universal Design Faculty designation. Steinfeld and his team will enhance a required intermediate studio, using universal design themes to teach good design.
