Reporter Volume 25, No.6 October 7, 1993 By ARTHUR PAGE News Bureau Director Homecoming activities, a football clash between the UB Bulls and the rival Buffalo State Bengals and a performance by comedian Larry Miller will highlight Parents and Homecoming Weekend '93 to be held at UB on Friday, Oct. 15, through Sunday, Oct. 17. "A Royal Tradition" is the theme of the weekend, which also will feature free lectures by top professors, campus tours and a women's volleyball tournament. The weekend will be co-sponsored by the UB's Office of Student Life, Office of Alumni Relations and Undergraduate Student Association. The corporate sponsors are Marine Midland Bank, N.A. and Mannikins Night Club. Check-in for parents will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 15 and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 16, in the lobby of the Student Union on the UB North (Amherst) Campus. Activities for parents on Oct. 15 will include an apple-polishing party at 4 p.m. in the Student Union. Faculty advisors and favorite professors will be honored at the event, sponsored by Order of Omega, the Greek-letter honorary society. "Nutrition and Fitness for Health Aging" will be the topic of the fifth annual J. Warren Perry Lecture, to be delivered at 6 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Katharine Cornell Theater on the North Campus. The free lecture, sponsored by the UB School of Health Related Professions, will be delivered by William J. Evans, professor and director of the Noll Laboratory for Human Performance Research at the Pennsylvania State University. There will be programs in residence halls from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 15 and Shabbat services and a kosher dinner are scheduled for 6 p.m. in Hillel House on Capen Boulevard. The first games in the two-day women's volleyball tournament will be held in Alumni Arena on Oct. 15, with the UB Royals taking on Hofstra University at 6:30 p.m. and teams from the University of Pittsburgh and the University of New Mexico competing at 8 p.m. The tournament will continue in Alumni Arena on Oct. 16, with UB taking on New Mexico at 11 a.m., Pittsburgh vs. Hofstra at 12:30 p.m. and New Mexico and Hofstra playing at 6:30 p.m. A homecoming pep rally and bonfire sponsored by the Undergraduate Student Association will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight on Oct. 15 in Goodyear Field on the UB South Campus. Two outstanding athletes, a co-founder of the UB Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame and the entire 1958 Lambert Cup Football Team and its coaching staff will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a dinner to be held by the UB Alumni Association at 7 p.m. in the atrium of the Fine Arts Center on the North Campus. Members of the Class of 1953 and Class of 1968 of the UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences will hold a reunion the evening of Oct. 15 in the University Inn and Conference Center, as will members of Theta Chi. Movies also are slated for Oct. 15 in the Student Union theater, with "The Princess Bride" being screened at 7 p.m. and films starring Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton beginning at 9 p.m. Events on Oct. 16 will include several free lectures on the North Campus that are open to the public. All tours will be escorted and leave from the lobby of the Student Union, with participants meeting tour guides 10 minutes before the scheduled time. The homecoming float parade, sponsored by the Undergraduate Student Association, will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 16. It will leave the Main Street Campus, proceed north on Bailey to Grover Cleveland Highway and then follow Grover Cleveland/Millersport to the UB Stadium on the North Campus. The homecoming football game at 1:30 p.m. will be preceded by a tent party sponsored by the UB Office of Alumni Relations inside the south gate of the stadium. A ticket to the footbaladers. A post-game party will be held following the game in the Student Union. Music will be provided by the UB Wind Ensemble and entertainers will include jugglers, a caricature artist and Renaissance players. Members of the UB classes of 1983-93 will hold a reunion following the game and until 6 p.m. in Pistachio's in the Student Union. Alumni of the UB School of Nursing will hear Kitty Klug speak at a homecoming dinner and meeting at 6:45 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Center for Tomorrow on the North Campus. An associate professor emeritus and alumna of the school of nursing, Klug will discuss book, "Suicide: The Constructive/Destructive Self." At 8 p.m. on Oct. 16, comedian Larry Miller will perform in the Triple Gym of Alumni Arena. If there are tickets remaining, they may be purchased at the door. Miller, whose comedy "graduating class" includes pals Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno and Paul Reiser, has made regular appearances on "The Tonight Show" and the former "Late Night with David Letterman." Besides starring in two specials on HBO, he played the boutique manager in the film "Pretty Woman" and is appearing in "Undercover Blues" and "Dream Lover." The weekend will close with a brunch from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Oct. 17 in Pistachio's in the Student Union. Reservation are limited to the first 325 people on a first-come basis.
