Reporter Volume 25, No.29 June 13, 1994 Elections are being planned for early next fall to replace the president of the Undergraduate Student Association, who resigned last month after she was arrested for allegedly using $467 of the organization's funds for herself. Karen Hillary resigned May 23 after Public Safety charged her with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, a misdemeanor. Herman Matfes, SA vice president, has assumed full responsibility of the SA presidency until a new election can be held, tentatively scheduled for the third week of September. According to a statement released by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, the arrest came after SA officers reported that several unauthorized transactions involving student activity funds were discovered during a routine examination of SA purchasing documents. As part of the normal audit and review process, unauthorized expenditures were detected, and Public Safety was asked to investigate. SA maintains a business relationship with Wegmans supermarkets in which vouchers signed by the Student Association treasurer are used. Hillary is accused of forging the treasurer's name on four occasions and using the vouchers for herself. She was arraigned June 7 in Amherst Town Court, according to Public Safety Investigator Daniel R. Jay. Student Affairs reported that steps have been taken to place additional safeguards on the system to prevent future abuse.
