Reporter Volume 25, No.29 June 13, 1994 You, too, can touch a life, make something good happen for someone else. Join other volunteers in the second annual United Way Day of Caring on Aug. 31, as they offer their time and skills to help health and human service agencies served by SEFA and the United Way. What can you do? During last year's effort 140 UB volunteers plastered and painted walls at Habitat for Humanity, raked and gardened at Geneva B. Scruggs Community Center, read to children in a day-care center and delivered meals to families in need at the Native American Center. Already this year, 134 volunteers from 61 units at UB have volunteered to take part in the 1994 Day of Caring. Of the volunteers, 36 have requested indoor work, 35 outdoor work, with 15 opting for physical labor and 72 offering to do whatever is needed. Among other preferences, 42 volunteers have asked to work with children and youth, 16 with senior citizens, 3 with adults, 6 with people who are physically or mentally challenged and 66 have said they'll go to anyone who needs help. To join in UB's mission of serving the people of Western New York, you can sign up by contacting Dr. Carole Smith Petro at 503 Capen Hall, North Campus. Professional and support staff should charge their volunteer time to their annual leave accruals. The 1994 program on Aug. 31 calls for 7-7:30 a.m. check-in at Buffalo Convention Center; 7:30 a.m., brief informational program and breakfast; 8 a.m., sendoff to agencies; 8:30-Noon, volunteers assist agencies; Noon-2 p.m., return to Convention Center for lunch and gala celebration.
