Reporter Volume 25, No.27 May 5, 1994 computer science Named Fellow: Stuart C. Shapiro, professor of computer science and chair of the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence, has been elected a Fellow of the American Association of Artificial Intelligence. A member of UB's faculty since 1977, Shapiro served as chair of the Department of Computer Science from 1984-90 and was acting chair from 1978-79. He received his doctorate in 1971 from the University of Wisconsin. The author of more than 100 technical articles and papers, Shapiro has published several books, including The Encyclopedia of Artificial Intelligence which in 1987 was named Best New Book in Technology and Engineering by the Association of American Publishers Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division. MEDICINE RECEIVES ALUMNI AWARD: Robert A. Klocke, UB professor of medicine and physiology and chief of the division of pulmonary and critical care medicine , was honored Feb. 26 by St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute at its annual Signum Fidei Awards dinner in the Park Country Club. Klocke, an alumnus of St. Joseph's, received his bachelor's degree from Manhattan College and his medical degree from the UB medical school. In 1992, he was awarded the Stockton Kimball Award for research, teaching and service. He is a past trustee of St. Joseph's. libraries Receives Rogers Award: Nancy Start, assistant librarian in the Health Sciences Library, has received the 1994 Frank Bradway Rogers Information Advancement Award. Presented by the Medical Library Association and sponsored by the Institute for Scientific Information, the award recognizes Start's outstanding application of technology for the delivery of health sciences information through her development and implementation of MEDLIB-L. Start was also recognized through the University Libraries Staff Recognition Program for her development of MedLIB-L as an important service for those in biomedical librarianship and information.
