Reporter Volume 25, No.26 April 28, 1994 Dr. Theodore T. Jacobs, surgeon, former hospital president Dr. Theodore T. Jacobs, former president of The Buffalo General Hospital and a former clinical assistant professor of surgery at UB, died April 9, 1994 in a Clearwater, Fla. hospital after a long illness. Jacob , 82, had lived in Clearwater since his retirement in 1975. He was associated with Buffalo General for more than 35 years as medical student, intern, resident, staff surgeon, director of the Outpatient Department and coordinator of house staff education. He was named director of the hospital in 1971, after serving as associate director for nine years. In 1972, he became president, overseeing planning for expansion and modernization which led to the construction of the hospital's 13-story tower on High Street. Jacobs received his medical degree from the University of Buffalo in 1938 and served during World War II in the 23rd Army General Hospital in Africa, Italy and France. He developed a private practice as a general thoracic surgeon after the war, performing some of the early heart operations on "blue babies" in Western New York in 1948 and 1949. He left his practice in 1959 when he was named director of the Buffalo General Hospital Outpatient Department. Jacobs who was a trustee of the former Comprehensive Health Planning Council of Western New York, was a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a former president of the WNY Hospital Association and a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American College of Hospital Administrators. He received the American Red Cross Distinguished Service Citation in 1975, in honor of his outstanding support of the Red Cross and its programs. When tropical storm Agnes struck the Southern Tier in 1972, he made emergency supplies available to the Red Cross and sent them to flooded areas at no cost. Survivors include his wife, Mae; two daughters, Alice Carles of Mountain Lakes, N.J., and Marie Kent Belcher of West Hartford, Conn.; a son, Thomas of Bliss; a stepson, Geoffrey Dutton; a sister, Evelyn Lutfy of Largo, Fla.; a brother, Joseph of Pasadena, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
