Reporter Volume 25, No.25 April 21, 1994 SOCIAL WORK HONORED AT DINNER: UB social work educator Bertha Laury was among those honored at the Women Helping Women/Erie County National Organization of Women dinner to be held April 20, in Marygold Manor. Laury, an associate dean and director of field education in the UB School of Social Work, was honored for her work in the prevention of teen-age pregnancy. A UB faculty member since 1972, Laury frequently speaks at national conferences on the growing problem of teen pregnancy and families headed by teens. She has served on numerous state advisory committees on teens and pregnancy. As field education director for the UB School of Social Work, she annually places 200 students in clinical internships throughout the state. Laury received a bachelor's degree from Paine College in Augusta, Ga., and a master's degree in social work from Atlanta University. MATHEMATICS ELECTED BY MATH ASSOCIATION: Stephen R. Cavior, associate professor of mathematics, has been elected to a three-year term as governor of The Mathematical Association of America. The organization, with 30,000 members, promotes the interests of the mathematical sciences, especially at the collegiate level. Cavior will represent the Seaway Section, comprising upstate New York, Ontario and Quebec. He previously served the section as chair and program chair. MEDICINE RECEIVE BUSWELL FELLOWSHIPS: Three physicians affiliated with the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences have been awarded Dr. Henry C. and Bertha H. Buswell Fellowships by the school. The fellowships attempt to strengthen research in the medical school by providing salary support for three years to permit physicians to engage in high-quality research. The award is funded through the Ralph Hochstetter Medical Research Fund in honor of Dr. Henry C. and Bertha H. Buswell. Susana P. Campos of the UB Department of Pediatrics, will use the fellowship to examine the interplay between endocrine hormones and cytokines in gene regulation, and the mechanisms of growth failure in certain diseases. Thomas P. Smith of the UB Department of Medicine, will pursue research focusing on the role of the endothelium (the layer of cells lining the heart chambers and blood vessels) in maintenance of coronary blood flow. Ajay K. Wakhloo of the UB Department of Neurosurgery, will investigate the use of stents in endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms.
