Reporter Volume 25, No.24 April 14, 1994 By MARK WALLACE Reporter Staff As spring training camp for the UB Bulls football team began last week, Coach Jim Ward reported that the camp would be devoted to teaching and mastering the basics. "This spring, we want to teach, teach, teach," Ward said. "We'll have come contact, but the emphasis will be on the good basic techniques that help you win ball games." Spring training camp is also used to evaluate what people will be playing where, Ward said. "At the end of spring ball, the guys will know where they'll be come August," he said. "Right now all positions are open, and the guys know that. "With all our hard work over the winter, we're hoping that this year we'll turn things around," Ward said. "This year we're going to be older, smarter, and much stronger physically." Crucial to improving last year's 1-10 record will be shoring up the kicking game, avoiding injuries, and the play of the offensive line, Ward said. "We're going to spend a lot of time on the kicking game in practice," Ward said. "In terms of injuries, last year we were weak in the lower part of the body. And we always need linemenQeverybody in the country is looking for linemen. But we have some young guys on the line who have grown in strength and are more mature this year." Ward said that last year definitely will be on the team's mind, but as a learning tool that will be used to make this year's team better. "I felt that sometimes I put too much pressure on the guys and the program last year," Ward said. "The team was 1-10, but they did a good job in many ways." Max Bowman, new associate head coach who has been head coach of Greenville College in Illinois for the last seven years, where he compiled a 49-15-1 record, said that the Bulls were young and still need maturity. "But that's always the case in jumping from Division III to I-AA," Bowman said. "We've got some very talented guys. We know we're thin on the line, but everybody's thin there, and we've gotten bigger and stronger. Now the guys need to put out the effort." Quarterback and All-American candidate Cliff Scott said "I hope we can go into spring ball and do some things we didn't do last year, and improve on some of the things that we already do well. Our passing game needs to be more efficientQif it isn't we're not going to be very good. "As leader of the team, I want to be the type of person who carries the team," Scott said. "I don't feel I did that last year." Coach Ward said that the Bulls schedule will be very similar to last year. They will play some different teams such as Lehigh and James Madison, as well as top teams including Youngstown State (last years Division !-AA national champion), Central Florida, and Illinois State. "We're going to be a good team, but it takes time, and it takes work," Ward said. "One thing I can tell you is that we've got a great teaching staff," Ward said. "Come out and just watch you'll see a lot of teaching taking place."
