Reporter Volume 25, No.23 April 7, 1994 April is "Diversity Month" and University Services is marking the occasion with arts exhibits, performances and presentations in the Fine Arts Center. A few events will be held at other campus sites. The idea, said Lisa R. Brocken, manager of employment/recruitment for Personnel Services, is to underscore the theme of diversity through artistic expression and all it implies about human difference and the exchange of ideas. Units in University Services will be treated to a variety of displays organized by faculty and staff in the performing and visual arts and by the Libraries through a series of exhibits. The line-up includes a variety of displays and events for individual units within University Services. For instance, the Controller's Organization yesterday watched intermediate ballet, tap and modern dance classes. Today's program for Student Finances and Records includes a food festival, Irish dance performance, and tour of the Fine Arts Center. Computing and Information Technology will hold a special assembly on April 26-27. The entire university community is invited to video presentations organized by the Department of Media Studies and to exhibits in the Science and Engineering, Health Sciences, Undergraduate and Lockwood Libraries. President Greiner will address a participants' assembly on April 28. "Last summer, Bob Wagner, senior vice president for university services, gave Ellen McNamara, assistant vice president for human resources, the charge of organizing diversity functions so that we can begin to learn how to manage diversityQthat is, to address anything that makes us individuals," said Brocken. "This is much broader issue than race and gender, and may encompass people with child care needs, sexual orientation, or the difference between the academic and administrative sides of the university." A shared interest in the arts led McNamara and Brocken to the April program, as they saw a natural connection between the arts and the diversity theme. "Creative expression is as unique as we are individuals," said Brocken. "Our focus was not only to clarify that managing diversity is part of University Services' mission, but also to make people within University Services feel part of the greater university, which is a diverse community. We also wanted to showcase our Fine Arts Center and the talent we have here." Those needing more information, may call Brocken at 645-2646, ext. 105.
