Reporter Volume 25, No.23 April 7, 1994 `Daniel H. Murray, 76, former UB Pharmacy dean Daniel H. Murray, 76, former dean of the UB School of Pharmacy, died March 26 in Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia, N.H. He had lived in Gilford, N.H. since his retirement in 1984. Murray was largely credited with developing the School of PharmacyUs strong research orientation, which continues to flourish today. The school is regularly ranked among the top 10 in the United States. He served as dean twice, from 1954-69 and from 1976-84. Murray was responsible for doubling the schoolUs enrollment and quadrupling the number of faculty. During the 1960s, under his direction, the School of Pharmacy led all others in the number of research grants it received. The school also accounted for 25 percent of all pharmaceutical research papers published in 1966-67. During his tenure, he helped create at UB the first departments of medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics and biochemical pharmacology housed in a U.S. school of pharmacy. A native of Fort Frances, Ont. Murray earned a bachelorUs degree in pharmacy from the University of Toronto. He also received a bachelorUs degree and a masterUs degree, both in chemistry, from the University of Saskatchewan. He received his doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Toronto. During World War II, Murray was a squadron radar officer in the Royal Air Force. In 1950, he became an assistant professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Toronto, and in 1953, came to UB as an assistant professor and assistant dean. In 1969, he was named dean of UBUs Graduate School and acting vice president for academic affairs. In 1971 he took a leave of absence to become provost for graduate education and research for the State University of New York Central Administration at Albany. He returned to UB to take over as dean of the School of Pharmacy in 1976. Survivors include his wife, M. Dorleen of Gilford; a son, Randall Gardner of Gilford; a daughter, Judith Bliss of Ann Arbor, Mich.; a brother, Bruce of Fort Frances; Ont.; a sister, Joyce Tilbury of Abbotsford, B.C.; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held this summer in Lake Winnipesaukee, N.H.
