Reporter Volume 25, No.22 March 24, 1994 Plans are under way for a celebratory year marking the university's Sesquicentennial to begin with graduation in May, 1996 and concluding a year later at commencement, 1997. The Sesquicentennial Planning Committee has identified several aims for the celebration, among them to: -Highlight UB's role as a major national and international university and broade-its national and international recognitio-and reputation. -Focus New York State upo-the university's key roles as the flagship campus of SUNY and a central player i-the development of upstate and Wester-New York. -Recognize and honor the achievement of UB faculty, students and alumni over the past 150 years. -Examine, i-a serious way, the university's past and the shape it gives to the future. -Enhance pride i-UB with development and fund-raising purposes. The Sesquicentennial Planning Committee has organized into sub-committees charged which developing plans for various elements of the celebration. As the first program and school established at the university, the medical school also celebrates its sesquicentennial i-1996-97. (See accompanying story.) Black Associate Vice President and Dea-of Students Ms. Bess Rose Sesquicentennial committee gears up for commemorative events With a little more than two years before the University at Buffalo and its School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding, the History of the Medical School Committee is already busy planning celebrations and events to commemorate the historic occasion. Composed of representatives from both the medical school and the university at large, the committee meets monthly as a whole; its task forces focus on specific aspects of the Sesquicentennial Celebration. In the planning stages are a symposium series, the medical school's annual Spring Clinical Day, various medical school and community-wide exhibits featuring historical medical memorabilia, a special sesquicentennial logo and the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the History of Medicine, scheduled from May 8 to May 12, 1996. The group is also working on a number of special publications, including A Medical history in Buffalo 1846-1996: Collected Essays, a Pictorial history of the Medical School, Selected Writings of Austin Flint and an alumni directory.
