Reporter Volume 25, No.20 March 10, 1994 Stuart M. Berger, health advice writer Dr. Stuart M. Berger, author of best-selling health and diet books, died March 2 at the age of 40. Berger, a 1973 graduate of UB, received the UB Alumni Association's George W. Thorn Award in 1986, as outstanding alumnus under age 40. A health advice columnist for the New York Post since 1984, Berger was known for the Southampton Diet. Berger's dieting and healing methods were based on nutrition and improving the strength of the immune system. His book, "Dr. Berger's Immune Power Diet," outlined the method by which he reduced his weight from 420 pounds to 210 pounds. At the time of his death, his weight had climbed to 365 pounds, according to preliminary autopsy reports. Robert A. Baker, Capen Award winner Services were held Feb. 26 in St. PaulUs Episcopal Church, Clarence, for Robert A. Baker, past president of the UB Alumni Association and 1993 recipient of the Samuel P. Capen Alumni Award for notable and meritorious contributions to UB and its family. Baker, 65, died Feb. 23 in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. The retired chairman and president of Johnson Precision Works, Baker served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and received a bachelor of science degree from UB in 1954. He held a series of sales-oriented jobs before starting Fabritron in Alden with several associates in 1962. In the 1980s, he doubled the size of the Precision plant, which manufactures precision machinery, retiring in 1989. Baker served as chairman of the Erie County Private Industry Council from 1981-86 and again from 1990-92. He had been a member of the board of directors of the council since its inception in 1979. He served on the GovernorUs Job Training Partnership Council and was former vice chairman of the Joint Mayor and County ExecutiveUs Task Force on Small Businesses. He also served on the advisory board of the Erie County Comprehensive Employment and Training Act program. Baker had received many awards for community service, including the Presidential Citation Award for the Summer Jobs Program in 1985 from President Ronald Reagan. Last year he received the Carl A. Draper Humanitarian Award from the Private Industry Council. Survivors include his wife, Doris; two sons, Robert Jr. of Orchard Park and Bruce of St. Louis; a daughter, Susan Jordan of Orchard Park; a brother, Dale, of Salem, S.C.; a sister, Eileen Zimmerman of Akron and seven grandchildren.
