Reporter Volume 25, No.20 March 10, 1994 COMPUTER SCIENCE PANELIST: William J. Rapaport, associate professor of computer science, and a member of the Center for Cognitive Science, was a panelist at the third annual meeting of the Society for Machines and Mentality, held in Atlanta in December, in connection with the American Philosophical Association Eastern Division meetings. Rapaport,the immediate past president of the Society, is also a member of the APAUs Committee on Computer Use in Philosophy. MEDICINE LEADERSHIP AWARD: Curtis J. Mettlin, research associate professor, chief of epidemiologic research and director of the Department of Cancer Control at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, received the National Volunteer Leadership Award from the American Cancer Society at its recent board of directors meeting in Atlanta, Ga. The award is given to ACS volunteers whose service to the national cancer organization has been long and distinguished. Mettlin has written more than 180 articles, chapters and books on cancer and his work has influenced many areas of cancer control, most notably research education and prevention. He was principal investigator of the ACS multi-institutional studyQthe largest prostate cancer detection study to dateQwhich found that the use of ultrasound and the prostate-specific antigen blood test in conjunction with the digital rectal exam significantly increases the detection rate for one of the most common types of cancer. He has served on many national ACS committees and task groups. From 1982-1988 he was the director of the Erie County unit of the ACS and served on the professional education and public education committees. COMPUTER SCIENCE PLANNING FOR SCHOOLS: Helene G. Kershner, assistant chair of the Computer Science Department, has been appointed to serve on the Williamsville Schools Technology Planning Committee. The committeeUs aim is to set goals for technology and technology education for the district for the next five years.
