Reporter Volume 25, No.17 February 17, 1994 Ward names associate head football coach Jim Ward, UB head football coach, has named Max Bowman to the new position of associate head coach. Bowman, head coach for the past seven years at Greenville, (Ill.) College, will be a practice coach and will handle adminstrative duties. Other changes announced by Ward: Jim Garland, linebacker coach, promoted to defensive coordinator; Andre Creamer, running backs coach, named defensive backfield coach; Joe Reich, defensive line coach, promoted to assistant head coach. Reich, brother of Frank Reich, Buffalo Bills quarterback, has also been named strength and conditioning coach. Men's Basketball Myron Banks scored a career-high 20 points and Lou Johnson added 17 as the Bulls defeated Central Connecticut State, 84-72 in an East Coast Conference matchup at UB's Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls picked up their second straight win to improve to 7-16, 2-2 in the ECC. UB shot 64 percent in the first half and used a 21-1 run to take a 44-27 halftime advantage. The Bulls opened up a 31-point lead midway through the second half until the Blue Devils put together a 19-0 spurt to pull within 80-68 with 1:35 remaining. The surge prove to be too little as UB shot a season-high 61 percent from the field. Rasaun Young scored 14 points while Banks pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. UB snapped their six -game losing streak with a 64-60 victory over Mid-Continent Conference member Youngstown State Feb. 10. The Bulls evened the season series with the win over the Penguins with both teams taking victories on their home floor. Bulls guard Modie Cox was the star of the game, hitting a short jumper in the lane with six seconds remaining to give UB a 62-60 lead. Following a YSU timeout, Cox stole the inbounds pass at midcourt and was fouled on and connected on both free throws to ice the game. It was head coach Tim Cohane's 150th collegiate victory. Freshman Kit Swenby scored a career-high 14 points to lead the team and also grabbed eight rebounds (five on the offensive end). Cox added 13 with three assists and four steals and Lou Johnson tallied 10 points. The Bulls fell to 5-16 with a 77-52 loss to Ivy League leader Pennsylvania Feb. 7. UB trailed 35-27 at intermission led by 13 first half points by Modie Cox. The Quakers then took control in the second half , going on a 25-1 run to start the second session. Cox led the Bulls with 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Lou Johnson added nine points off the bench while Kelvin Robinson pulled down seven rebounds. Women's Basketball Sophomore guard Andrea Fraley scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Royals past the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils, 87-63 Sunday afternoon at Alumni Arena. Fraley, making her first start of the season, was 6-of-13 from the field including a three-pointer and four-of-six from the charity stripe to lead the Royals, now 14-7 overall and 2-2 in the East Coast Conference. The Royals opened up a one point lead with a 15-0 run early in the game and never looked back going up 39-27 at halftime. Besides Fraley, three other players scored in double digits for the Royals. Nadine Mastroleo had 14 points while Brenna Doty and Brooke Smith each added 13. Melanie Vogel, Kris Holtz, and Anne Gallagher each grabbed six rebounds to lead the club. The Royals outshot their opponents 46 to 32 percent from the floor and out rebounded the Blue Devils 50-46. The victory was the program's 50th since moving to Division I in 1991-92. Earlier in the week, the Royals fell at home Thursday to Mid-Continent Conference member Cleveland State 80-63. Smith pulled down a career-best 17 rebounds while junior Jen desGroseilliers paced the Royals with 14 points. The Royals picked up a non-conference win 74-70 at Colgate on Feb. 7. Smith scored 19 points to lead the team while Holtz and Mastroleo each had eight rebounds. For her efforts, Smith was named the conference player-of-the-week for the third time this season. Women's Swim Team The Royals women's swim team fell to 4-5 with their 183-112 loss to St. Bonaventure on Saturday in the team's final home meet. Ann Marie Gorski, swimming for the last time at Alumni Arena, won two events for the Royals. The senior took the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.35 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:29.80. Diver Karen Lasky won both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. Megan Connolly won the 200 butterfly for UB in 2:14.16. Wrestling Will Moss, Jr. (158 pounds), Marcus Hutchins (167) and Sean McLaughlin (heavyweight) won their individual matches for Charlie Cheney's wrestling squad as the Bulls fell at home to Bucknell 31-10 on Saturday. McLaughlin won his match over Matthew DiGiacomo with a 4-2 overtime decision with a two-point takedown in the extra session. Men's Tennis The men's tennis squad kicked off their spring season over the weekend at the University of Pittsburgh Invitational Tournament.. Orrin Pridgen reached the finals of the number five flight where he was defeated in the championship match by Penn State's Chris Cahill. Dave Monkarsh and Mike Proulx reached the finals of the doubles competition. They were also defeated in the championship by their Penn State opponents.
