Reporter Volume 25, No.16 February 10, 1994 D. Bruce Johnstone, SUNY chancellor since 1988 and former president of Buffalo State College, announced his resignation Monday because of health reasons. Johnstone, 53, is suffering from cancer and is expected to return to Buffalo for treatment at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. UB President William R. Greiner issued the following statement: "Bruce Johnstone has been a leader of good heart and great vision for SUNY. His commitment to State University and his own personal dedication to the system have been crucial during recent years, as SUNY has faced fiscal and organizational challenges. At the national level, he has taken a significant leadership role in raising awareness and understanding on key educational issues, particularly in the area of financing higher education. He really has done a tremendous job. It has been a pleasure and privilege working with him. "All of Bruce's colleagues at UB join the thousands around the state who are wishing him well. We know what a difficult decision his resignation is for him, and what a difficult time this is for both Bruce and Gail. While we would like to be able to welcome Bruce home to Buffalo under better circumstances, we will certainly be thinking of the Johnstone family and wishing them the very best." Johnstone's resignation is effective March 1. The SUNY Board of Trustees will meet next week in New York City and are expected to name an interim replacement.
