Reporter Volume 25, No.16 February 10, 1994 Richard S. Jarvis, vice provost for academic programs and research, SUNY Central, will give the opening remarks during a discussion meeting on Graduate Student Professional Development , Monday, Feb. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the Center for Tomorrow, North Campus. Jarvis, a former UB faculty member and administrator, has titled his talk, "Graduate Student Professional Developmentt: SUNY System Perspectives." The session is a joint project of the Graduate School, Joyce E. Sirianni, dean; and the Office of Teaching Effectiveness, Frank Schimpfhauser, director. The working session will also include discussion on enhanced graduate teaching assistant training programs, a subject considered crucial to UB in 1990s. Following Jarvis' remarks, small groups will discuss the following resolution from the University Faculty Senate: "Be it hereby revolved that the Faculty Senate of the State University of New York endorses the principle that all doctoral students should have preparation and experience in the teaching of their disciplines. To advance this principle, the Faculty Senate encourages the State University of New York to develop plans for implementing training or preparation for teaching as a requirement for the doctoral degree.": A record of these discussions will generate a follow-up report to be used by a joint Graduate School and Office of Teaching Effectiveness Task Force.
