Reporter Volume 25, No.14 January 14, 1994 MEN'S BASKETBALL The Bulls have already equaled their number of wins from last season with five. The team stands at 5-12 overall and is 1-1 in the East Coast Conference. UB met some tough competition in December and January; they're prepared to host the ECC tournament in March. Facing his most recent employer, Boston College, Head Coach Tim Cohane and crew shocked a large crowd at Alumni Arena, going on a 17-5 run to open the second half of the contest to take a 63-61 lead with 11 minutes remaining. Boston College, however, outscored UB 23-8 the rest of the way to remain undefeated. UB's effort did not go unnoticed. Over the final 10 seconds, the crowd gave the Bulls a standing ovation. UB's bid for another upset fell just short against Miami , falling to the Hurricanes 63-57. After UB's 73-50 loss to Duquesne, the team began its eight-game road swing against host Marist in the Pepsi-Marist Classic. Marist, however, went on a six-point run to hand the Bulls their sixth straight loss. Guard Modie Cox was selected to the All-Tournament Team for his 34-point, 10-assist performance. The Bulls once again entered the win column in the consolation game of the tourney, defeating St. Peters College, 68-61. UB then headed West for contests at Cal-State Northridge and Loyola Marymount. The Bulls dropped a 90-72 decision to Northridge and fell to Loyola, 93-77. Following an 86-78 loss to future Mid-Continent foe Youngstown State, the Bulls earned a 71-57 win over present East Coast Conference member Hofstra in the ECC opener. UB dropped their final two road contests of the trip falling to Niagara 88-76 and Northeastern Illinois 86-73. UB returned to Alumni Arena Jan. 26 to face the Big East's Pittsburgh Panthers. Following the contest, the road warriors take to the highway again to meet ECC foe Troy State on Jan. 30 and Jacksonville of the Sun Belt Conference on Feb.1. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL The UB women's basketball team are off to their best start ever with an 11-4 mark as January draws to a close. Maryland Eastern Shore fell victim to the Royals Dec.12. UB then fell to Niagara 77-61 at Alumni Arena on Dec.18. Following the Christmas holiday, the Royals bested Maine 50-47 to give head coach Sal Buscaglia his 58th win with the Royals, the most in school history. The Royals then placed third at the Red Flash Classic in Loretto, Pa. UB dropped the opener to Bucknell 72-63. UB took the consolation final with their 80-78 win over host St. Francis on New Year's Eve. The Royals returned home to begin a three-game January homestand by defeating Coppin State 66-47. UB moved to 9-3 on Jan.9 with their 62-48 win over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference favorite Fairfield. The Royals defeated Marist 65-51. UB took their fifth consecutive with their 74-45 victory at Maryland Eastern Shore. UB's winning streak was snapped over the weekend as the Royals fell to East Coast Conference rival Hofstra 58-55 at Hempstead, L.I. The team continues their road swing with meetings at Niagara and Troy State before returning home to host Chicago State on Feb. 3. WRESTLING The Bulls wrestling squad under the direction of Head Coach Charlie Cheney has already showed a marked improvement over last season's 1-16 campaign. The UB grapplers are 2-6 in dual meets with decisive wins over Division III power Brockport State and Eastern Michigan on their home mat. UB placed seventh out of 20 teams at the 25th Annual New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championship hosted by RIT Jan.21-22. Friday, the Bulls return home for a match against Central Michigan beginning at 7:30 p.m. WOMEN'S SWIMMING The UB women's swimming and diving team, under second-year head coach Dorsi Raynolds, owns a 3-2 record in the early going of the 1993-94 season. The Royals opened the season with a perfect 3-0 record, defeating Edinboro University and Canisius at home by scores of 158-72 and 133-46, respectively, while handing Niagara a 146-94 defeat on the road. The Royals' first loss came to Syracuse University, 162-81. UB put on a strong showing in the Pittsburgh Invitational, finishing in fourth place behind Pittsburgh, James Madison and champion Miami (OH).The Royals fell to 3-2 with a 164-82 loss to Maryland Baltimore County in the first action of the spring semester. Over holiday break, 12 of 19 swimmers on the Royals' squad were deemed Scholar Athletes, helping to account for an overall team GPA of an impressive 3.1. MEN'S SWIMMING With 14 freshmen and a 4-2 record, men's head swimming coach Budd Termin has plenty of reasons to be optimistic about UB's future. The Bulls opened the 1993-94 campaign with a 159-63 thrashing of perennial Division II power Edinboro University in the Fighting Scots' home pool. In UB's first home meet of the season, the Bulls defeated defending Atlantic 10 champion St. Bonaventure, 130-107. The Bulls lost to Big East power Syracuse, but a fifth-place finish in the prestigious Pittsburgh Invitational produced 36 personal-best times for UB. The Bulls then reeled off consecutive dominant performances, defeating local rivals Niagara (136-63) and Canisius (153-48) to improve its record to 4-1. The Bulls then fell to Maryland Baltimore County, 127-107, in the squad's last home meet of the 1993-94 season. INDOOR TRACK UB's indoor track season got under way earlier this month. Both the men's and women's squads finished fifth in the season opening Don Wright Team Challenge at Western Ontario.
